Editor, Street Sheet
The Street Sheet is a street newspaper published and sold in San Francisco, California which focuses on the problems faced by homeless people in the city, and on issues of poverty and housing. Founded in December,1989, just one month after the Loma Prieta earthquake added thousands to The City's rolls of homeless people, the Street Sheet is the oldest continuously published Street Newspaper in North America. The Coalition on Homelessness publishes Street Sheet, and vendors, who recieve the paper free of charge, distribute it on the streets of San Francisco and other Bay Area communities, usually in exchange for a one-dollar donation. The mission of Street Sheet is two-fold:1. To put money in the hands of homeless and low income people. The Street Sheet, as noted above, provides a source of income to homeless and very low income San Franciscans that would otherwise not be available to them. There are no hoops to jump through. Anyone needing help is welcome.2. Is the voice of the Coalition on Homelessnes, San FranciscoThe Street Sheet educates and informs the public on the real causes of homelessness and provides a grassroots perspective on poverty and related issues not available in mainstream media. By providing a forum for homeless people to voice their opinions and concerns, the paper challenges the prevailing mythology: that homeless people are lazy, ignorant, and choose to be, or remain homeless. The Street Sheet has brought a new influx of volunteers from business, government and service organizations who join the Coalition's work groups and participate in advocacy to formulate constructive solutions to homelessness in San Francisco, The Bay Area, and through our affiliation with WRAP, The Western Regeonal Advocacy Project, the western United States.
