ABSTRACT: The Kalpini gold deposit is an orogenic lode-gold deposit within the Eastern Goldfields Superterrane of Western Australia and has a resource of 3.24 Mt of ore at 1.8 g/t Au. I presented the results of a combined geochemical, petrological, and stable isotope investigation of this deposit, and provided new insights into the controls of Au mineralisation in this area. Three suites of igneous rocks were identified in the area, a low Zr and Fe dolerite (Suite 1), a high Zr and low Fe andesite (Suite 2) and a high Zr and high Fe dolerite (Suite 3). Mineralised contacts within the deposit are often associated with quartz-carbonate veins and sericite alteration or ‘bleaching’ of the surrounding host rock. These contacts are variably mineralised, with gold concentrations (1–2 ppm) significantly higher than background levels located proximal to or within shear zones along the contacts between Suites 1 and 2, although higher gold concentrations within the deposit (5–59 ppm) are restricted to the contacts between Suites 1 and 3. Sulphur, carbon and oxygen isotope data indicate the deposit formed from a single reduced auriferous fluid derived from a magmatic, metamorphic or potentially mixed magmatic-metamorphic source, with mineralisation occurring at temperatures of 310°C–520°C. Contacts between units most likely acted as preferential fluid conduits, although the differences in Au concentrations outlined above indicate that the location of fluid pathways were not the dominant control on the formation of the Kalpini Au deposit. Instead, the preferential location of Au mineralisation at the contacts between Suites 1 and 3 suggests that the Fe-rich nature of the Suite 3 dolerite controlled sulphidation and the precipitation of gold, leading to enhanced Au enrichments along the sheared contacts between these two dolerite units.
