I am attracted to philosophy not only because it can attempt to answer the most profound questions imaginable, but because at its best it is also reflexively critical of the methodology it wields in search of these answers, as well as the motivations for asking such questions at all. The sort of critical-analytical skills required for such pursuits are the greatest strengths which I have cultivated during my education in philosophy and political studies, and I am looking for interesting opportunities to use and expand these skills. Solving an interesting problem is its own reward. I thrive in environments that encourage creativity and constant self-improvement. I am typically an independent worker, and within groups I naturally assume leadership roles. I am experienced in delegation, but I am also capable of working on received instructions in a group or individual setting.I am also very experienced in public oration and performance. I finished third in Ontario in 2008 in the Ontario Lion's Club public speaking competition, and throughout my post-secondary career I have delivered many seminar and conference presentations, introductions, lectures, and tutorials. I also have related experience in broadcasting; after reading morning announcements for two years during high school, I hosted a weekly radio show on CFRC 101.9 FM (Queen`s University, Kingston) for over five years. Additionally, I have played bass guitar in two bands throughout high school and my undergraduate degree, performing publicly on over 150 occasions.

Phd StudentUniversity Of Maryland Sep 2015 - Apr 2017At UMD I helped administer several undergraduate philosophy courses as a teaching assistant leading discussion groups and grading assignments. Although my philosophical interests focus on aesthetics, most of my teaching work here focussed on ethics and this was valuable experience in this important sub-discipline. -
Research AssistantQueen'S University May 2011 - Aug 2015Queen'S UniversityOver the past 3 years, I have assisted a professor in the School of Policy Studies at Queen's University in the researching, writing, and editing of several scholarly articles, and performing more secondary duties (data sweeps, annotated bibliographies, re-formatting) on other projects, most of which concern the structure and dynamic of terrorist networks in North America, Europe, and Australia, or the motivations for joining such cells. This has resulted in at least one publication, an article I co-authored which appears in the Spring 2013 issue of the journal Global Crime, an issue which is currently being published as a book. My most particular area of expertise is a Somalia-based group known as al-Shabaab, and so I was interviewed by the CBC and several other media outlets as an expert guest following al-Shabaab's attack on the Westgate Mall in September 2013. -
Teaching AssistantQueen'S University Sep 2013 - May 2014Kingston, OntarioI served as one of two TAs for PHIL 111, a full-year introductory philosophy course taught by Dr. Deborah Knight. For half the students, I graded their term work with written feedbacks, held office hours and appointments to discuss assignments and class material, and led several tutorials on course content and essay-writing. -
Cycling AmbassadorCycle Kingston May 2012 - Aug 2012Kingston, OntatioI was hired on a 300-hour contract along with one other student to act on behalf of this local, not-for-profit group in promoting safe and healthy cycling in the Kingston area. This entailed organizing, planning and carrying out safe-cycling clinics open to the public, as well as performing general public outreach promoting cycling in general and Cycle Kingston events and initiatives in particular. A large part of the job including delivering hour-long presentation to elementary-school children in their classrooms. This involved reaching out to over 30 elementary schools in the area, planning several different presentations geared to different age levels, and ultimately delivering about 75 presentations to over 1200 students.

WalkerQueen`S Walkhome May 2011 - Aug 2012Queen`S UniversityMany universities organize similar "safe-escort" services offering free and safe accompaniment around the campus and surrounding area at night-time, but Queen's Walkhome is exceptional in its confidentiality and popularity, as well as its decision to rely on employees rather than volunteers. Along with a female "walker" partner, I provided patrons with discrete, friendly and professional accompaniment to their destinations.
