- Actively involved in the admissions process since 2008, as a teaching assistant, proctor, interview panelist and team leader as selected by the Director of Admissions & Undergraduate Affairs. - Successfully applied to be a coach for 10 second year UW Pharmacy students in an 18-month pilot program. The initiative explored the roles that non-faculty pharmacists from the community could play with respect to coaching and mentoring a group of students. The principle was for the students to have a professional relationship with a pharmacist that would help them learn about themselves during their time as students as well as the profession from a non-faculty source. Interactions were both formal and informal. Meetings were at a regular frequency plus as needed and took place using interactive media (Adobe Connect/Skype), in group settings and on an individual basis.- Co-op employer for UW Pharmacy students for a community pharmacy rotation. Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor & Regional Clinical Coordinator

Kitchener, Canada Area

The School of Pharmacy offers PharmD students a range of experiential-learning opportunities over the duration of its academic program — from community service opportunities in which students choose ways to contribute to the work of social service organizations in the Kitchener-Waterloo region, to co-operative education work terms during the first three years of the program, to patient care rotations that take place during the fourth year of study. The fourth-year patient care rotations are the capstone of the PharmD program, an entry-to-practice program that provides students with advanced clinical training to prepare them for an expanded role in patient care. The PharmD program provides students with three eight-week direct patient care rotations that occur during the last eight months of the program. The School of Pharmacy's patient care rotations use a community of practice model that encourages integration of students into various regions across the province of Ontario. This model encompasses 14 regions across Ontario. Each community of practice in a region will be led by a Regional Clinical Coordinator who is locally based.Students are assessed according to the educational outcomes approved by the Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada (AFPC) and the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) competencies. The RCC oversees activities and placements that take place within the region at each practice site, as well as between practice sites. The RCCs have knowledge of all practice sites, and will therefore be able to connect preceptors and practitioners at various sites to meet local needs or to enhance information-sharing.

Pharmacy Student

I was voted into the Pharmacy Student Society President's chair, entering the second year of the program. The existing counsel amended the constitution to allow me to run, as the position was reserved for 3rd year students only. Having just completed a year in pharmaceutical sales, my relationship building and organizational skills came in handy with managing, guiding and leading our council. In addition, I was the face of the students when it came to professional events, professional conferences and administrative activities. I managed our existing relationships with our professional contacts and forged new ones as we continued to grow as a professional student body. By completing my tenure essentially one year early (compared to previous years) I took the opportunity in my third and fourth year to increase my level of involvement by joining faculty committees where student representation was required. This gave me incredible insight into how day to day operations and decision making took place. By volunteering for our accreditation committee, I understood more about the detailed decisions behind every piece of the pharmacy program as well as the level of long-term planning that must be put in place. Some decisions made by the committee would not produce a result that we could study for another 4-6 years. At such time we would have to review and make immediate adjustments as needed and plan accordingly for the next accreditation cycle. It was a simple Plan-Do-Study-Act, only spread over 6-10 years and under constant review.I oversaw ~25 council members, representing ~320 students and managed a budget that had to abide by the charitable organization tax guidelines as set out by the province of Saskatchewan.
