Dr. McClellan established and oversees operation of the Materials Preparation Facility located within the Materials Science and Technology division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). His thesis and early research was based on materials for high temperature structural applications with an emphasis on synthesis of single crystal alloys for strengthening mechanism studies. Since becoming a staff member at LANL in 1996, his research has emphasized synthesis of novel or custom-designed materials for many different applications, including ceramic nuclear fuels, scintillators, radiation tolerant and high temperature structural materials. He has experience in preparation of metallic, intermetallic and ceramic materials and in growth of crystals from the melt using a variety of methods with emphasis on intermediate to high temperature growths using floating zone and Czochralski techniques. A substantial component of his recent work is in ceramic nuclear fuel development with an emphasis on determining and understanding process-microstructure-property relations. Dr. McClellan is the national technical lead for ceramic-based fuel technology development for the Fuel Cycle R&D Program. In this role he manages the ceramic fuel development and characterization activities and serves as the US representative for advance fuels arrangements under the multi-lateral GenIV Sodium Fast Reactor project and the US/Japan bi-lateral Civil Nuclear Enegry working group . He coordinates development (design, fabrication, characterization and testing) activities at multiple national laboratories and univeristies. He also interfaces with fuel vendors for FCRD-funded projects. His primary focus has been on oxide, nitride and ceramic composite fuels.
