I am a public service psychiatrist focused on community/population/public health/mental health and improving psychiatric services. As the principal in VisibleHands Consulting I strive to practice a socially informed and just version of community psychiatry focused on achieving health equity. Along with my daughter Alice Fox Thompson MD I founded and now direct the Visible Hands Collaborative, to bring solidarity care to the US in the guise of Integrated Community Therapy (see www.visiblehandscollaborative.org). I am the lead psychiatrist at the Squirrel Hill Health Center, the medical director of Milestone Community Mental Health Center and the Medical Director of the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Leadership Council. I see pilots at the Center for Aviation Medicine. I have been a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Pitt. Until earlier this year I was the psychiatrist at the Positive Health Clinic of AHN. From 2010 till 2013, I was the Medical Director of Recovery Innovations and before that, the Medical Director of the Center for Mental Health Services in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in the USDHSS, where I provided psychiatric expertise to public policy formation and implementation. I have been engaged nationally in improving mental health care, developing and implementing recovery oriented, evidence based services, integrating primary care and behavioral health care, creating a population health approach to mental health and promoting public service. I had a leading role in developing SAMHSA's initiatives in global health, recovery oriented services and the development of whole person primary health services. I am a native of Pittsburgh, educated at Kenyon College and Boston University School of Medicine, which I attended as a National Health Service Corps Scholar. I did my psychiatric residency at Jacobi Hospital/Einstein College of Medicine in New York, where I was the senior chief resident. I did a post doc in mental health services research at Yale. Joining the Yale faculty, I developed and served as the PI on an NIAAA grant providing treatment for homeless men. I joined the Pitt in 1991 as the Director of the Institute for Public Health and Psychiatry. I have developed and provided services for homeless persons, people with addictions, persons with HIV, patients in community health settings, the African American community in the Hill District and refugees. In 2005 I became the Co-Chief Medical Director of the Harrisburg State Hospital, helping in its closure and following its patients in the community.
