I'm Chief Product Officer of Deloitte's Smart Factory software, lead the Smart Buildings practice, and I lead engagements in IoT, Cloud, Smart Buildings & Smart Factory at Deloitte Consulting. I’m a Technology Fellow, a Deloitte Certified Chief Architect and a Cloud Native Guild Master. My work spans from building a practice (Smart Buildings), building a software product (Smart Factory) to designing & running workshops, leading the responses to RFPs and creating proposals, architecting solutions, creating partnerships with vendors, to leading engagements with ultimate responsibility & accountability for successful delivery. I also am talent group leader for the Deloitte cloud architecture talent group. The vast majority of my work involves leading a number of smart buildings projects & initiatives, and managing a team of 100+ creating a new smart factory software product for Deloitte.

Creo is a very ambitious program for Cengage, with the full expectation that it deliver some key benefits - it is Cengage’s vision for a digital-first holistic product creation framework, and includes the strategies, architecture, standards, policies, processes, tools, and services used to efficiently create highly effective digital and print education products. Creo is intended to deliver cost savings, shorten time to market and support new platforms & product models (e.g. with semantic digital content standards supporting greater adaptivity and personalization). The program is the largest and most complex & ambitious program at Cengage and my responsibility is to deliver it successfully.✔ Delivered our first software release to production mid January 2017, after designing a major course correction for Creo – this release is part of a series from Jan – June 2017, which will deliver comprehensive improvements to content creation & production and very substantial savings & increased revenue.

Pearson-wide responsibility for Product Architecture and Product Platforms. My primary innovation is the instigation of a platform business model and the design & construction of a standard platform for use across Pearson in the construction & delivery of all Pearson digital learning products.✔ Obtained board level approval for a major product platforms initiative which is aimed at bringing Pearson into the platform business so it can further improve its market strength.

Senior executive overseeing a team of about 120 professionals and a multi $million budget, responsible for creating the Schneider standard EcoStruxure IoT platform underlying all connected products, such as Facilities Management, Smart Buildings, Smart Factory, Energy Management, Data Center Infrastructure Management, Solar Farm Management, Industrial and more.✔ Responsible for creation of the Schneider standard EcoStruxure IoT Platform upon which all of Schneider’s digital services are built. My team, composed of a large number of technology professionals (onshore & offshore), is responsible for 2 major activities - designing & creating critical integration services (SOA) used by all consumer applications; and management, design/architecture, provisioning and deployment/release of many applications & services from across the bank onto our middleware platforms. Our Integration Services are very critical to the organization, with approximately 400 business services supporting 70 service consumers and a daily transaction volume of more than 4 million with a projected annual double digit percentage increase. The technologies we work with include Websphere Application Server, Websphere Message Broker, DataPower, MQ, Java, Spring, SOAP, JDBC, PL/SQL and Oracle, etc. We have 380 Websphere app servers and 450 Message Broker & MQ servers under management. I was responsible for the Software Engineering, Release Management and Environment Management teams for the $100m ESP2 program at HR Access, responsible for 230 technology professionals, located in USA, France, Ireland, Tunisia and India. We have been highly successful in delivering, on time, very critical items and won an award as a result. This work transformed an at-risk, highly technically complex function into one which is efficient, effective and successful, enabling successful certification. Some of our notable achievements include:✔ Created and successfully rolled out a very effective, comprehensive industrial strength SDLC infrastructure toolset and software delivery pipeline including JIRA, QC10, Confluence, Bamboo, Maven, Nexus, Subversion, etc. used by about 1800 people✔ Successfully rolled out a comprehensive, industrial grade, ITIL compliant Release Management and DevOps infrastructure and processes✔ Successfully created a number of critical tools for software management, data management, configuration management, deployment automation and release management, supporting the proprietary HR Access software and providing integrations with 3rd party tools such as Subversion. The tools are written primarily with Java, Grails, GWT✔ Successfully adopted Scrum across critical teams and provided the SDLC infrastructure for program-wide Scrum use✔ Managed servers containing many environments for Dev, DIT, SIT for use by about 230 people✔ Created comprehensive infrastructure for monitoring using Hyperic HQ and tcServer✔ Directly provided improvements to development process, which demonstrate a 4x increase in throughput, and to the deployment process which demonstrates a 10x increase in velocity✔ Developed the business case and strategic plan to deliver a comprehensive architecture review of the HR Access ESP2 Platform and proposed a re-architecture to be undertaken over several years.

In my 4 years running the Solutions Architecture & Software Engineering team in FPCMS I managed a large team of architects & engineers who worked directly for me and were matrixed into various app teams. The applications my team had responsibility for were all successful - some represented the most significant transformation at FPCMS in 18 years. This includes one of the top-3 largest application projects at Fidelity which transformed a batch-type trading platform into a message based STP engine achieving 90% decrease in cycle-time, reducing manual processes by 80%, and realizing annual technology support cost reduction of 65%. Notable achievements:✔ Saved $3 million, improved response time and service quality by creating an operational management utility for a number of critical AAA applications✔ Reduced time-to-resolution by 85% and the number of L3 escalations by 75% by providing self-service automation & DevOps that enabled production operations staff to perform most tasks that previously required development intervention✔ Introduced and enabled successful adoption of software engineering & collaboration tools for use in all software development work in FPCMS✔ Created a successful, very effective deep-dive technical review process for all software development in FPCMS✔ Resolved a significant fund audit issue by leading the team to produce 25 AAA applications in one-sixth of the normal time by adopting Tomcat/tcServer, Groovy/Grails and Agile/Lean techniques✔ Recognized for performance excellence and expertise with the RAD initiative becoming the standard platform for Fidelity’s derivative s processing✔ Saved 50,000 hours of productivity and $4.9 million environmental costs by directly fostering the Lean Application Server IT Transformation initiative enterprise-wide✔ Created software quality metrics program✔ Created the standard event-driven integration system✔ Architecture & technical responsibility for many applications ranging from small to large.

I was VP Architecture in Fidelity’s Enterprise Architecture (EA) group and spent 5½ years in that position. My role was in providing architecture consulting services to various Fidelity businesses and in formalizing architecture & technical standards across the enterprise – I worked both at a high level and at a hands-on level of detail. I was very active and heavily engaged with a number of business units during my tenure. I was directly instrumental in creating the standard Java technology stack and architecture patterns/blueprints which continue to be used throughout Fidelity and my work at Enterprise Architecture was so successful that I won 2 President’s Awards as a result. My combination of technical depth/breadth and business acumen helped my effectiveness in this role. Here are just some notable achievements:✔ I was one of the primary authors of a number of major blueprints which are now used as the standards throughout Fidelity for the construction of almost all applications & services✔ I was instrumental in defining the standard Java tech stack in use across Fidelity that enabled the replacement of many proprietary frameworks and the saving of many $millions✔ I was instrumental in introducing widespread adoption of such open source products as Spring, Tomcat, Quartz, iBatis, Mule, Jetspeed, Hibernate, AspectJ & Struts✔ I’ve been a core contributor in helping re-architect the XTRAC workflow system and the fidelity.com & netbenefits.fidelity.com sites which underwent significant changes as a result. XTRAC currently processes 40 million transactions annually, manages over 400 million online documents and supports more than 20,000 users✔ I was core to the re-architecture/re-design of the critical Fidelity Shares application.

I was Systems Engineering Manager with Fidelity Investments (FISC Ireland) where I worked from March 1999 until August 2001, when I moved, by invitation, to Enterprise Architecture in Boston. In addition to responsibility for some major technical projects, I was the founder & manager of the Fidelity Wireless Centre of Competency and ran the FISC Ireland Advanced Development team (ADF). In ADF I managed high profile projects on WAP, Web Speaker Verification, VoiceXML for voice access to web content & Voice Navigation of web content. This work has been used as the basis for a number of core capabilities that continue to be used at Fidelity.I’ve managed major web development projects for Fesco HR/Payroll and Fidelity Canada (FICL), both on IIS. I’ve also managed Websphere projects for FIIS, TerraNua and within our wireless work.My combination of considerable technical depth & breadth together with good business acumen and natural leadership & management skills, helped make me effective and successful in this role.I was awarded a President's Award in recognition of my successes and invited to join the Fidelity Enterprise Architecture team in Boston.

I founded and managed my own small software development company in 1988 based on my invention for a mechanical CAD application. In the 12 years of the company’s existence our product, CAMold, became the foremost CAD application for plastic injection mold design in the world. CAMold introduced many innovations such as the use of a parametric, feature based, assembly modeller and it used an API to retain CAD system independence and hence enable it to be supported on a number of strategically important CAD systems. This API was originally developed by me on a major European applied industrial research project and subsequently became a European (and proposed ISO) standard.Some of the largest and most significant industry players adopted and sold CAMold as their standard – some examples are D-M-E, the world’s largest mold component manufacturer/supplier which sold CAMold under the name Moldware Ultimate; Delcam, one of the main CAD/CAM companies in the industry, sold CAMold under the name DUCTMold; and Cimatron, another important CAD/CAM company in the industry, sold CAMold as part of their CAD system.My work in Tecnocad also involved extensive implementations and use of industry standard CAD and Product data formats, such as STEP/PDES, IGES, DXF, PDGS, SET and VDA/FS.Although I have very considerable technical depth, as founder and CEO of my own successful company I also have wide experience in non-technical areas such as marketing, finance, negotiating agreements, making presentations with good oral/written communications skills.During this time I created and led a large EU BRITE-EURAM research project, funded by the European Commission, that involved a number of partners in Belgium.

Tecno Design had the first ever CAD/CAM system in Ireland, from Graftek, and I was chosen to manage the computer (an advanced Gould super-mini computer), the CAD system and program the CAD system to better tailor it to the plastic injection mold design business of Tecno Design.While here I also lead a key workstream of a large EU BRITE project, funded by the European Commission and involving partners from Belgium and Germany.

I served in the Irish Army Reserves for 9 years, during the height of the 'troubles' in Northern Ireland. My service included extended periods undertaking border patrols in trouble spots, in addition to other security functions.

I got 4th place in the national civil service exam and as a result I was invited to interview for the most senior position it's possible to enter the civil service at without an advanced degree. The position, which I successfully obtained, is one in which they recruited one person per year (others in this position were internal promotions) - it was Higher Officer of Customs & Excise, and in this role I had a commission as Naval Commander.My work mostly involved investigating and prosecuting illegal activities, combined with a number of oversight & supervisory functions.
