About Kenneth Mak

Kenneth has worked extensively in structural design with non-conventional materials. He holds a PhD in Civil Engineering with a focus is in long-term durability and material science. During his tenure, he was a primary instructor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Queen's University and Royal Military College of Canada.Kenneth works in the field of structural engineering at Blackwell.     My role is to design the structural system for buildings and sculptures. I have applied conventional and parametric design approaches to a range of projects, which include conventional (e.g. steel, concrete, wood, mass timber) and unconventional (e.g. cable, rammed earth and fibre-reinforced polymer sandwich panels) materials systems.

    My thesis is focused on the long-term durability of natural building materials, specifically addressing the replacement of conventional fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) systems with sustainable alternatives for new construction and rehabilitation, including the use of flax fibres, pine oil and furfural. In addition, I mentor other doctoral and master's degree students as well as supervise undergraduate students through their research programs. This ranges from project development and fabrication to testing and analysis. My involvement also spans to other fields, such as Chemical Engineering and the use of cellulose nanocrystals for structural applications. Furthermore, I have been involved in numerous peer review processes and grant applications.
