• Journalist/Cameraman - Hostile Environment ReportageSelf Employed 1977 - 2007Various Locations WordwideSoviet/Afghan War & Other ReportageKen’s experience in Pakistan and Afghanistan began with the advent of the Soviet Afghan War, working as a freelance journalist/cameraman. He covered the Soviet Afghan War for 10 years, making 36 trips with the Mujahidin and spending in all over three and half years inside Afghanistan. This meant more time inside, on foot and over all terrain types in all seasons than any other Western observer of that conflict. These trips could be up to four months in duration and involved the observational advantages of walking with the Mujahidin through Badakshan, Bamyan, Bhaglan, Ghazni, Hazzarjut, Helmand, Kunar, Kabul, Kandahar, Laghman, Kapsia, Logar, Nangrahar, Nursitan, Paktia, Paktika, Panjshir, Pawarn, Takhar, Urzgun, Wardak, Zabul. This placed him in close cohabitation with his Afghan hosts through all phases of the Soviet-Afghan War, allowing a unique grass roots perspective of the evolution of the Soviet approach and Afghan response. His Afghan travels involved time with commanders such as Jalaluddin Haqqani (now leader of the Haqqani Network), Rahim Wardak (later Afghan Minister of Defence) and the legendary Ahmed Shah Massoud. He also knew the prime Pushtun Commander, Abdul Haq, very well throughout the duration of the conflict. He continued to cover Afghanistan in the following period and his documentary (original concept/ investigative journalist/cameraman) - “Abdul Haq: The Life and Death of An Afghan Warrior” won the Royal Television Society’s ‘Best Investigative Documentary Award’ 2003. Ken also reported on conflicts in Lebanon (with the US Marines, Israeli IDF, Lebanese Christian Phalange and Muslim Mourabitoun, Druze and Palestinian PLO and PLFP organisations), Israel (West Bank), Kurdistan, Cambodia (with the KPNLF, ANS and Khmer Rouge guerrillas), Colombia, Congo, conflicts in former Yugoslavia (Croatia and Bosnia), Iran/Iraq War (both sides), First Gulf War, Liberia, Philippines and Sudan.
