After an exceptionally long and productive career with First American Title Insurance Company, I’ve enjoyed the change of pace in providing consulting services to small businesses. Collaboratively, we’ve been able to improve financial management and reporting systems, maximize profitability, and reduce waste.  Working with a Tallahassee-based printing company, I identified problems with their accounting system interfaces that were inaccurately calculating labor and materials costs. By resolving this problem, the company was able to accurately calculate their costs, quote jobs correctly, and improve their profit margin. I also analyzed the printer capacity for the company and compared to actual output. The feedback I provided allowed the business owner to deliver staff training that maximized the capacity of equipment. By developing a tracking system by product line for a South Carolina crafting business, the owner increased her profits. I also improved her financial data, which allowed her to secure a $200k loan for inventory and equipment to scale her business. Another problem I solved for the South Carolina business was analyzing her specialty paper usage. By calculating the value of her paper scraps, the owner then developed profitable products from those scraps and reduced waste 15%.

In my last role with First American Title, I reported directly to the Chief Accounting Officer in establishing the Tallahassee Finance Service Center (FSC). When the decision was made to close the Tallahassee FSC in 2016, I chose to leave the company and remain in Tallahassee. In addition to managing all accounting services including general ledger, order entry, and accounts receivable, I also worked extensively with the company’s M&A efforts. My work included collaborating with internal and external auditors on compliance issues and addressing sales tax and insurance premium taxes. I also established Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for accounting processes and coordinated with internal underwriting and legal staff in premium pricing decisions. My team included as many as eight direct reports, with a total team of up to 225 employees in the U.S. and offshore.  When the company decided to reorganize around customer type rather than geography, I restructured our cost centers and reporting units to support this change.  Initially, 95% of our accounting work was U.S.-based. By shifting 40% of the work to India and other process efficiencies, I cut 20% from my budget. As part of this change, I developed training manuals and implemented the necessary procedural changes.  By eliminating redundancies and streamlining closing processes, I was able to reduce the monthly close from five days to four, which significantly reduced overtime expenses. After conducting a detailed analysis of our banking fees, I recommended to corporate that we reduce the company’s JP Chase lockboxes by more than half, which saved $15k in annual fees. I was selected to attend First American’s Corporate Emerging Leader Program, which I successfully completed. I subsequently implemented the training program within my team.

As one of two solution architects on this project, I coordinated with more than 40 decentralized accounting offices and with interface partners from operations, human resources, PR, and claims. In addition to managing five internal employees, I also managed five Deloitte consultants.  By centralizing accounting processes into three Finance Service Centers (FSC), each of which supported multiple geographic operating regions, I significantly reduced our month-end close. I played a key role in opening the first FSC in Phoenix and second in Rancho Cucamonga, CA.

As a regional controller, I managed the full complement of ledger teams including A/R, A/P, fixed assets, payroll, cash, and escrow reconciliations. I also provided consolidating reports and files for corporate including supporting schedules for tax, footnote disclosure, and audit schedules. In a coordinated effort with internal, external, and regulatory auditors I supported all efforts including controls testing, transactional testing, and substantive balance testing. I also prepared acquisition pro forma, conducted due diligence, and coordinated integration of acquired company accounting functions. Finally, I managed the abstracts of all leased facilities and equipment for payment and disclosure activity. Prior to serving as Controller for the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic region, I served as Assistant Controller of the Florida Region.  The consolidated financial reporting system and financial reporting team I developed for the region provided crucial information that allowed management to plan and budget more effectively.
