I specialise in charity law and am co-head of Brodies LLP's Charities & Third Sector Team. My experience of and in the charities and third sector spans 20 years. In this time, I have acted for large high-profile charities including Royal Charter bodies, national charities with branch structures, major grant giving trusts and philanthropists. I regularly advise on the governance, establishment, merger and reorganisation of charities and regulatory matters with the Scottish Charity Regulator. I am a member of the Charity Law Association and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.I have a keen interest in the governance of charities and have been involved in several high profile cases involving the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator. Furthering that interest I was delighted in 2019 to join Scotland's Third Sector Governance Forum. I am presently a charity trustee of the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) and ENABLE Scotland. Formerly, I was the Chair of East Park School and a charity trustee of the National Youth Choir of Scotland and treasurer of Edinburgh Music Theatre with whom I also performed. I qualified as a solicitor in 1993 and worked for two medium-sized chamber practices in Aberdeen. Thereafter I joined Turcan Connell in 2001 where I worked until early 2020, latterly as a Legal Director in the Charity Law Team. I was Head of the Firm's Charity Unit and co-ordinated the charity trustee training programme.
