Profile bio

About Kenneth Samson

I was a first-generation American college student. My parents have college degrees but graduated in the Philippines. While maneuvering through college, I had little help from my parents who had no experience navigating the American college system. I attended Pasadena City College, transferred to California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA), and graduated with little help from academic counselors, not because I did not want help but because I did not know how to ask for help. The Educational Counseling program will help me serve students immediately by promoting help-seeking behaviors while increasing outreach for first-generation and marginalized students in community college.I have worked on addressing educational equity as a practitioner in the classroom by improving learning opportunities. Working with multicultural students of all ages and different socio-economic backgrounds in K-12, I have witnessed disparities. I have supported students who had all the resources they needed to succeed readily available. Additionally, I have worked with students from historically marginalized groups in the inner city. Diversity courses helped me identify the inequalities and inequity at the charter schools and recognize my role in improving outcomes by providing focused academic support. I also used a holistic approach by implementing project-based learning and enrichment activities. I learned that these students were capable and possessed strengths that were enhanced when provided with structural support like the students at Polytechnic.I took this knowledge to California University Preparatory School, a private international high school where students are F-1 Visa holders. Though most come from affluent families, all of them need help navigating the American education system. I helped them navigate the system and taught them help-seeking behaviors because I knew how hard it was to maneuver without support and guidance. I was also the Advisor for Student Council and National Honors Society where we built community with one another and recognized the value of service.I have since taken various positions at community colleges after attending USC Rossier’s Educational Counseling program. Although I can recognize inequity, I want to implement changes through research and policy in the community college system. The Educational Counseling program has prepared me to strengthen equity efforts in community colleges. Equity is key for community colleges since they are open-access campuses that serve a wide variety of students.
