A writer and later multi-media journalist for Connecticut’s largest newspaper. Work included developing, reporting and writing a variety of stories for print and digital platforms. Assignments included regular news beats, features and enterprise stories aimed a broad audience in Connecticut and beyond. • Used understanding of public opinion, social media and traditional media use to create engaging and attention-grabbing news stories for print and the Internet.• Performed research, checked all facts to maintain a high standard of journalistic integrity and ensured that stories conformed to accepted style. Edited my work for clarity, length and accuracy.• Developed stories and news sources independently and on assignment, covering a range of topics.• Enhanced the Courant as a source of news on religious issues by working with a team to cover reorganization of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hartford in which churches were closed as well as efforts by interfaith groups to bring together Christians and Muslims.• Complemented the Courant’s coverage of environmental and energy issues by covering hydro power development, solar energy and water supply issues.• Made the Courant a resource on state and national history by covering the work of a Connecticut man to win recognition for African-American soldiers who fought in the American Revolutionary War. Work included stories on efforts to have the Daughters of the American Revolution comply with a court settlement requiring the publication of a list of such soldiers and an attempt to have a monument built in Washington, D.C.• Worked on team coverage of high-profile weather events, including devastation in Connecticut brought by Tropical Storm Irene and Hurricane Sandy.• Wrote about controversial local issues, including drug use among young people and race relations in suburban high schools.
