The team raised 100% of the funding, built the park, and it opened on May 10, 2014, with Mayor Michael Nutter cutting the ceremonial ribbon at the grand opening.

    The Philly Pumptrack is the result of hundreds of hours of dedication from an all-volunteer team. The Bicycle Coalition sponsored the project, and it received additional help from Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, Advanced Sports Inc., Neighborhood Bike Works, Bicycle Therapy, and local bicyclists and many other sponsors.A pumptrack is a dirt track around which riders can ride bicycles (especially BMX bikes) by using a pumping motion instead of pedaling. It is technical, a great way to learn good bike handling skills, and super fun. The footprint of the track is small and the track requires relatively little maintenance.The pumptrack was created to be a place for urban youth and adults, close to their homes, to ride bikes in safe numbers and in mixed-age groups. The pumptrack will be an open space where both riding and spectating are encouraged, community affairs.Early on, the organizers identified short, medium, and long-term goals for building Philadelphia’s first pumptrack.In addition, the Philly Pumptrack is an enhancement to the collaborative initiative between Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and Neighborhood Bike Works to engage youth at local recreation centers in Bike Clubs designed to develop safe riding skills, bicycle-related mechanical skills and the overall enjoyment of bike riding.
