What began as an experiment in 2002 to develop a transformative education in collaborative and relational leadership has become a powerful and inspirational journey in designing, facilitating, teaching, and researching leadership learning for diverse engaged professionals in multiuple sectors. In my capacity as Associate Professor, I have taught and designed courses in leadership theory, learning community, values and ethics, global leadership, participatory research, policy and systemic change, and several others. I have also incorporated adaptive leadership learned at Harvard’s Kennedy School into the curriculum.

As founder and co-director (with Doug Paxton) of the Leadership Center for the past 8 years, I have contributed to the development of a wide range of programming inside and outside of the College including: • Designed a global leadership certificate program in partnership with a global talent development organization. The program has enhanced the leadership capacity of young professionals from all over the world.• Designed a leadership artistry for managers program for the city of Oakland.• Co-designed and delivered a community leadership program for San Jose and Moraga.• Co-designed and delivered a 21st century leadership seminar to project managers at AT&T, the Federal Reserve Bank, UC Berkeley, and Alameda County’s sheriff’s department.Co-designed and facilitated various workshops such as:• The Heart of Coaching: Essentials Skills in Bringing Forth the Best in People • Presence in Leadership ~ Embodying the Interplay of Inner and Outer Change • Collaborative Leadership Lab: Developing Change Agents, Co-sponsored with Swissnex, San Francisco, CA• Mastering Direct Conversations: Keys to Effective Leadership • Core Values at Work

Director, Leadership Studies ProgramsSaint Mary’s College of CaliforniaI provided program development for 3 programs at the forefront of leadership education:• The M.A. in Leadership• The B.A. in Leadership and Organizational Studies• The Leadership Center Over the past 12 years we have graduated over 600 people in the Master’s program and served over 1,000 people through the Leadership Center. Our learners come from private, public, and nonprofit sectors. They are diverse in age, ethnicity, gender identities, industries, and levels of responsibility. We continuously update the program in response to the changing needs and aspirations of our learners’ lives, and the contexts in which they work. In addition to the above accomplishments, I have:• Taught and designed courses in leadership theory, learning community, values and ethics, global leadership, participatory research, policy and systemic change, and several others.• Incorporated adaptive leadership learned at Harvard’s Kennedy School into the curriculum.• Helped create the Leadership Center, co-directed it for the past 8 years, and built it into a revenue producing arm.• Designed a global leadership certificate program in partnership with a global talent development organization. Tamalpa Institute: An International Movement-based Expressive Arts Education ProgramMy affiliation with the Tamalpa Institute began in 1981 as a student, performer, and apprentice with Anna Halprin. In 1993 I became a core faculty member, and over the past 20 plus years I have taught hundreds of international students in the Tamalpa Life/Art Process (an embodied and aesthetic approach to learning and leadership, which I have helped develop). My particular areas of focus include: • Applying an integrative approach to designing learning and change experiences• Developing capacities and skills in healthy group life, group improvisation, and collaboration • Cultivating creative and relational intelligences • Exploring the interplay of self, social, and ecological awareness • Designing personal and social change practices in work and life• Creating an embodied, embedded, and artful leadership practiceI have delivered all of the above programs in the U.S. and overseas.

In my 10 years of teaching at the institute, which has been a pioneer in transformative education for nearly 50 years, I had the privilege to help develop the School for Transformative Learning from 1994 to 2004, which focused on a trans-disciplinary, whole person, and collaborative learning environment.
