About Ken Earley
Marketing for brands? Love it. Marketing myself? Not so much. So I'll keep this brief with five quick highlights:1. In a nutshell: I'm Ken, a St. Louis-based writer & creative director working to build strong teams and solve business problems. Sure, I love punny headlines and slick design, so I push to do our best work. Personally, I'm much more focused on driving results. We win when our brands win.2. My experience: I've truly worked on a little bit of everything. Experiential and digital for big brands (Nike, Microsoft, Samsung, Walmart, United Airlines, Chevron). Event marketing with VR/AR in aerospace & defense (Lockheed Martin, U.S. Army). Branding and websites for small- and mid-sized companies (real estate, finance, professional services, hospitality). 3. My approach: The creative industries do a terrible job at developing leaders. We get into this work to make and create, but then one day, you wake up and you're leading a team. My management style stems most from my time as a line cook and chef. •Hire great people.•Equip folks to do their best work.•Allow them to find the solutions while you focus on the bigger picture.•Rally and support the team to achieve more than they think is possible.4. A (professional) secret: I hated writing growing up and even avoided English classes. I was a science nerd, spending my first three years in college as a biology major. The summer of my junior year, I realized that I liked solving problems more than anything else. On a whim, I did some voiceover work for a friend – and I've been in the industry ever since. But I still use the scientific method, even though marketers call it "test and learn." I thank my Grandma's decades as an English professor for instilling in me an understanding of writing and grammar. (Really, she used to re-grade my school papers to catch anything my teachers had missed.)5. Industry thoughts: The marketing and advertising industry changes faster than any other, mainly because we work across brands and simply have a wider scope. But that's far from true in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. We lag behind in DEI and that will continue to stunt our growth, innovation and impact. I'm proud to check that "two or more races" box. I hope to create more diverse pathways into marketing and advertising for the next generation – and build a culture of equity and inclusion everywhere I work.
