Inspired by the editor’s own unconventional upbringing and President Barack Obama’s commitment to encouraging and supporting responsible fathers, it brings together 20 African-American women to share deeply personal essays that examine the positive, bittersweet and awe-inspiring relationships they share with the fathers in their lives. From the dad who pulled double duty to fill the space left when his ex-wife died, to the brother who raised six children from behind bars, to the grandfather who showed his love by carefully vetting suitors, the truths in Bet on Black shift the dialog about what it means to be a Black father in the United States.
