As Quality Engineering Supervisor, Dr Scally has current responsibility for the management of the functional, metallographic, drug coated balloon testing laboratories and calibrations department.

As Managing Scientist reporting to the senior managing scientist my role was to work with the environmental forensics group within Exponent USA supporting the litigation management of the natural resource damage assessments of the Deepwater Horizon, British Petroleum (BP) Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Practice lead for Forensic Chemistry within the Applied Chemistry & Data Sciences group, natural resource damage assessment (NRDA) programs.

As Technical Director Dr Scally developed a consultative approach for the technical interpretation of environmental laboratory data, specializing in forensics and acting as a court expert witness for a number of international cases. His work involved the development of oil spill and industrial waste fingerprinting methods to evaluate oil / waste spill; oil / waste properties, fate and behavior of oil / waste and other hazardous organics in the environment. Dr Scally’s analytical chemistry experience involved the development of various statistical techniques for data interpretation of crude oil and refined oil spill correlations and age estimations following release; oil bioremediation studies; identification and characterization of oil hydrocarbons in marine and terrestrial environments; spill treatment studies with the use of modern analytical techniques (such as GC and GC/MS). His work in the development of multi-step GC/MS screening process in combination with identification of unique biomarkers to identify source(s) of mystery spills from a wide variety of potential origins has been used successfully on client projects.Dr Scally has significant project management experience having provided direction in the defining of project scope, goals and deliverables; the development of full-scale project plans and associated communications documents. Dr Scally has the ability to effectively communicate project expectations to team members and stakeholders in a timely and clear fashion.

As Head of Research and Development Dr Scally was responsible for the development of strategic partnerships for new product development with industry and Universities in the area of waste water treatment plants. In this role Dr Scally was highly involved in product and service planning, partnering opportunities and business development.

As Associate Director Dr Scally developed and implemented project management programs for on-site inspections and monitoring of air, groundwater and surface waters for the compliance with Integrated Pollution Prevention Control (IPPC) and local authority licenses within Ireland. He conducted construction site and IPPC licensed environmental management system (EMS) compliance audits. Provided on-site noise monitoring assessment for new construction developments to develop baseline values and predict noise impacts. Development and optimization of waste water treatment plants to ensure compliance with discharge licenses.

As General Manager Dr Scally successfully established the leading European environmental contaminated land laboratory testing business in Ireland. This involved the sourcing of the laboratory site, building the laboratory, recruitment of staff, purchasing all analytical equipment and establishing the customer base. Dr Scally developed the analytical petroleum chemistry capability within the laboratory ensuring that the laboratory quality management system worked effectively in accordance with the requirements of Quality Assurance / Quality Control Management system - ISO17025.

As Senior Environmental Scientist Dr Scally developed gas chromatography methodologies for the analysis of soil, sediment and aqueous samples for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), and total petroleum hydrocarbons – volatile and extractable and reported results on many client projects.
