About Kerstin Forsberg

Information Architect: Qualified by 40+ years of experience in solutions, standards and strategies in pharmaceutical, news and automotive. Lifelong Learner: I did my industrial PhD studies in Informatics mid-life. In 2010 I started to blog and tweet, as @kerfors, for professional awareness and interaction. I enjoy taking online courses to get a better understanding of things like clinical trial design, python programming, internet of things and machine learning from world leading teachers at Harvard, Karolinska Institutet, MIT and Stanford via edX and Coursera.By going beyond just capturing questions and analyzing problems as they are expressed today I often find myself "in the business of discovering things that users don't already know that they will want" (quote by Tom O'Reilly).

    Information Architect

    Mölndal
Driven by a passion to improve the utility of clinical trial data and metadata to support reuse.I developed and advanced AZ ClinicalTrials 2016-2024, a data integration layer and application to describe and search 25000+ trials. It was based on my learnings back in 2007-2009 from designing a ISO/IEC 11179 based metadata repository (MDR)—the implementation of it failed. One of the key learnings was that we started in the wrong end: Before detailed metadata about the data—we first needed to be able to search information about all our trials, encode what the informed consents say about how data can be used, understand what scientists want to do with the data, what have been done already in earlier analyses, and point to where different sets of data are located. These are all aspects which need to be considered to take informed decisions when reusing data and are all supported by AZ ClinicalTrials.I worked in different parts of the organisation: R&D Information Architecture, Clinical Informatics, Clinical Information Strategy, and Enterprise Information Architecture. A common theme for me moving back and forth between "Business" and "IT" has been knowledge building and sharing. By following scientific developments, public discussions and raising internal awareness about opportunities and challenges in applying general data standars, such as unique identifiers (URIs/PIDs), and specific ones, such as CDISC SDTM.I was engaged in several cross-industry initiatives: Innovative Medicines Initiative's (IMI) Electronic Health Records for Clinical Research (EHR4CR), W3C's Health Care and Life Science (HCLS) interest group for semantic web, Open Biomedical Ontologies (OBO) community, and Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium (CDISC). My engagements resulted in a number of public and internal articles and blog posts, e.g. "Smart Program Design Through a Common Information Model", and "Global, persistent and resolvable identifiers for clinical data".

Supervised master theses on federated search for intranet content, topic map driven information navigation for cardiovascular research, semantic web standards for AZ Glossary, and entity extraction from news content. In 2006-2007 I defined the Information Infrastructure research area, part of a Medical Informatics Center for clinical research and health care.

Five employees developed a first version of FieldWise, a commercial knowledge management platform for mobile work domains, with a planned implementation for the news journalism domain. However, we were way too early - 7 years before iPhone and Android apps.
