Specializing in memoir writing, I develop, design, and deliver writing fundamentals and craft to students in multiple stages of their writing careers. I have successfully guided students in memoir writing and personal essays, from ideation to developmental editing. My classes are designed to give writers the necessary tools to develop their writing for submission to a publication or an agent.

I am a versatile independent journalist specializing in developing and adapting long-form journalism into multimedia formats. In addition, I write about U.S. politics, consumer finance, and women and wealth for GOBanking Rates, MSN, NASDAQ, and Yahoo Finance. As a newspaper journalist, I worked for the New York Times and Gannett properties based in Western North Carolina. Among my achievements were winning the New York Times Award for Outstanding Journalism for reporting about the impact of U.S. migration on small Mexican towns and cities, covering post-apartheid health care in South Africa, witnessing a rural Honduran town rebuild after a hurricane devastated the region; reported on the 2004 Presidential election -- from grassroots campaigns to daily reporting from the Democratic National Convention. and partnering with the investigative team that uncovered alleged abuse in North Carolina's juvenile justice system. In addition, I wrote a weekly political column about how state government and politics affected the lives of everyday people living in the western North Carolina mountains. Finally, I was the first Black woman to serve as President of the North Carolina Capital Press Corps, which established rules and negotiated the press's professional relationship with the state legislature.
