Things I think about: in the 21st century, as we're bombarded with more and more and more information, on screens in our hands, on walls and desks, in our laps, on the sides of buildings and roads... the result of design at work is ideally meant to help us decode and digest the abundance of all of this information, and when done well, it helps us do so in a meaningful and efficient way.Part of my work as a designer is defined by my ability to translate all of the non-visual stuff, into the visual stuff. Taking brand, discovery, and requirements and turning them into deliverables that align with institutional character; that create clear, understandable hierarchies; that deliver user interfaces driven by and centered around the user; that produce impactful and efficient experiences, that feel intuitive and delightful.Things I believe: an inherent part of the design process is collaboration. Collaboration with your clients, interdisciplinary teams, the user. Ultimately the most successful outcomes of design are built around relationships, connecting the dots, synthesizing and translating data and research, convening information in a meaningful way for the person on the other side of the product or service. This means that the core component of my role as a designer is communication. Starting with a process that is characterized by problem definition, and seeing that through from end to end.

Course AuthorPluralsight Mar 2016 - PresentDraper, Ut, UsPluralsight, is an online platform offering hundreds of tutorials in design, gaming, web development, software, 3D, etc. For Pluralsight I've currently authored two courses. Visual Design: Best Practices for Refining Designs, which threads the connections between alignment, weight, scale, contrast, repetition, grouping, style, and color to give you the tools you need to control your visual designs with precision and intent. https://www.pluralsight.com/courses/visual-design-best-practices-refining-designsVisual Design for the Web, which touches on typography, color, layout, responsive design, and principles of html. The primary intention of the course is to map visual design principles to the working mechanics of the web, recognizing the difference between digital design and print. https://app.pluralsight.com/library/courses/visual-design-web-2465/table-of-contents -

Interactive DesignerIfactory Apr 2011 - Oct 2013Boston, Ma, UsAs an interactive designer at iFactory, I was part of small teams who came together for projects—most often in higher education—to help rethink our clients' web solutions. My responsibilities involved ideation with team members to create unique process solutions for our—often very different—projects; information architecture for a small subset of our projects; interactive design; and of course visual design. This last piece—visual design—was always the core of my focus at iFactory. During my time there, my mentors taught me how to create what they called, "art directions" for each of our projects which was always our first step to solving visual design challenges. This deliverable was a way for us to mood board for our client teams; to pivot around their visual brand identity and come up with a number of small/brief visual exercises that would help us home in on visual tone, flare, gesture that felt right to their project. Full "skins" of interface designs would follow to determine the bigger picture of look and feel and finally what iFactory called "keyscreens" that would be fleshed out to visually describe all of the individual patterns of interaction that would be needed for the greater system of the website. -

DesignerSametz Blackstone Associates Aug 2006 - Apr 2011Boston, Massachusetts, UsSametz Blackstone Associates was my entrance into graphic design—a true primer into this profession. There, I was able to apply and grow my graphic design skills broadly between medium and function. Projects ranged from brand identity system design, to web design, to business cards and letterhead, or magazine spreads and annual campaigns, to interactive advertising and illustration. I believe it's this spectrum in design and the exceptional design sensibilities of my mentors, that provided the critical design foundation I continue to use today.
