About Kerri Wagner

We've aligned with the belief that punishment will change a person's behavior. For years, individuals have committed the same crimes, over and over, expecting a different result; while our justice system has handed down the same sentences, also expecting a different result. The prominent misconception is that punishment (alone) will reduce recidivism and change behavior long-term. Reducing recidivism involves a collective effort among all of us in the Criminal Justice field, but achieving that goal requires the active participation of changing our own thinking [as professionals] first. It compels us to own our part of the problem and to be a part of the solution. Marked reduction in recidivism can only be achieved when new management techniques are applied and effective, smart justice policies are implemented and measured. It requires supervisory agents to use discretion and 'think outside of the box' to apply alternative interventions that target the thinking behind the crime. Without these changes, we continue the cycle of insanity...
