Growing up, my parents taught me that having food on the table and a roof over our heads were privileges. At a young age, I was taught to give back to my community whenever possible. My family bonding time would consist of working in soup kitchens and donating food/clothes. This mindset led me to wander into my volunteer ambulance corp in my hometown when I was sixteen. With little experience volunteering or working with patients, I wanted to give back to my community in a way that I was not able to before. I became a certified EMT at 16 years old and have been involved in EMS ever since. This field has truly opened my eyes to working in an emergency setting and in a high-paced environment. I discovered that I wanted a career in emergency medicine because I knew that having a higher level of education would increase my scope of practice to be able to do more for my patients. EMS has also opened my eyes to the disparities in our healthcare system including its lack of affordability. This has led me to believe that working in healthcare is where I will make the most difference. Researching healthcare professions was a long and winding road. I researched all different fields and was still conflicted. I shadowed various healthcare professionals and hoping to find an easy answer, and I did. The doctor was involved in patient care and treatment, which was exactly what I was looking for in a career. Ever since this realization, I have been actively working towards my career goals. Currently, I am working while applying to medical school programs. I am always looking for further my knowledge and connect with those with similar interest; feel free to reach out.
