For the past twenty-five years, since qualifying as a social worker, I have worked in a variety of statutory services. Initially, I was a probation officer during which time I was seconded for a year to a medium secure unit. After gaining experience of the mental health system I went on to work as a care manager in an adult mental health team where I trained as an ASW (since the amendments to the Mental Health Act 1983, in 2007, Approved Mental Health Professional).In 2003 I came to Nottingham from London and worked as a mental health social worker with older people: assessing people in order to commission services, supporting carers and working as an ASW. I also trained as a Best Interest Assessor in order to prepare for the introduction of DOLs. As I changed jobs to work in the community forensic team I didn’t worked as a BIA, but I continue to receive legal updates, particularly in relation to the interface between the Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act.In 2014 I left the community forensic team to take up the position of senior practitioner in a small charity, Integritas. In 2016 we became Improving Lives and we have continued to grow and develop our work to support people with complex needs in the community. We offer a holistic approach to enable people to manage their difficulties more effectively.
