My approach to counselling is very much Solution Focused. I find this orientation not only respectful to the person I am working with but empowering of the person they are. I understand counselling another person as a position of honour in which I am invited into a person’s life to share their most private thoughts. I view myself not as a person with all the answers, but as someone who can provide a client with the space they need as the expert on their own life to enhance their self awareness, gain in self acceptance and discover for themselves the answers they are seeking. SFBT is about reminding you about your strength, a light in the darkness, that taps into your hope to empower you to discover a way forward in a challenging experience that is respectful to you and right for your life. SFBT invites you to consider what you hope for, the positive difference you would like to see in your life, then walks alongside you to identify your preferred future. In this way, rather than leaving a session with an expanded version of the problem, you can leave with hope to move towards the life you wanted. The solution to a problem is more likely to be found through discussing the life you would like to be living in more detail, leading towards the change you seek. Spending time discussing a hoped for preferred future can inspire motivation and confidence to bring this about in reality.
