My successful two terms as President of Education and Welfare opened up national opportunities. I was selected for the paid position of Student Reviewer for the 4th cycle of Enhancement-Led Institutional Reviews (ELIR) coordinated by QAA Scotland, I undertook a review of theUniversity of the West of Scotland in 2020. The purpose of an ELIR is to ensure institutions are meeting the appropriate quality assurance criteria such as the UK Quality Code for Higher Education, with a specific focus on enhancement activity and the sharing of best practice.My specific duties as a student panel member include:- Ensuring the review fully considers the student experience- Chairing meetings with staff and students, ensuring people feel comfortable and able to speak openly- Challenge the university in areas of student interestAll panel members have the responsibility for:- Critically evaluate the reports and data provided by the institution prior to the review- Engaging and contributing to a planning visit and 5 day review visit at the institution- Consulting with QAA Scotland throughout the review process- Challenge the University where appropriate- Demonstrating an in depth knowledge and understanding of the UK Quality Code- Work as a team to agree the overall judgement of the effectiveness of the University's quality arrangements- Writing sections of the public report which maps the panels findings to the ELIR guidance and QualityCode
