I'm a Community Support and Development Officer for Birmingham City Council. I work within the NDSU (Neighbourhood Development and Support Unit) which is within the Neighbourhoods Division (City Operations). My role is varied, and I am the theme lead for both Neighbourhood Planning - a legal power for communities to have a say on developments in their area - and Capacity Building - supporting community organisations to thrive. I'm also working in Aston and Newtown wards - coordinating a targeted capacity building programme, funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, Community and Place Pillar.Among other things I write NDSU's newsletter - you can sign up online: https://www.birmingham.gov.uk/newsletter-signupI'm interested in Service Design and journey mapping - and modernising processes to both improve services for Birmingham's residents, and help teams work together more effectively. Service Delivery Support OfficerBirmingham Community Matters May 2020 - May 2023Birmingham, England, United KingdomBirmingham Community Matters (BCM) is a charity supporting people who would like to start, run or grow their community group or voluntary project. BCM offers peer learning through 1-1s, small group meet-ups and themed webinars.BCM's core team and trustees are experienced in running successful, long-term community groups and charities, and if there's something you'd like to know / would like help on, BCM are likely to be able to help - or if they don't have direct experience, they will find someone else who does, and collectively learn so that knowledge can be shared to help more people.Outside of work, I volunteer extensively in my community and this experience informs the work that I do for BCM. I've got stuck in with various tasks; applying systems thinking to adapt and streamline some of BCM's internal processes and approaches, including implementing the use of online project management and working to develop a new website. At BCM I've worked on; - Visual identity and graphic design- Supporting events and enquiries- Consulting on Service Design and the helpee user journey- and more recently, project managing and producing the Neighbourhood Planning Toolkit: Local Visions for Birmingham City Council's Neighbourhood Development and Support Unit. I’m really proud to be part of a growing organisation which, at its very core, is set up to help people and places that are meaningful to them. -
Independent Graphic DesignerKerry Leslie Design Jun 2011 - Oct 2023Birmingham, England, United KingdomMy career has been predominantly within the arts, community and heritage sectors, and love work that allows me to engage with people and places that are meaningful to them. www.kerryleslie.comSelected clients: National Trust, Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, New Art Gallery Walsall, Midlands Arts Centre (MAC Birmingham), Oxford University Museum of Natural History, SHOUT Festival, University of Birmingham, Bristol University, ecobirmingham, Fierce Festival, The Old Rep, Birmingham Community Matters, Friends of Cotteridge Park Working across a breadth of projects and industries has given me experience that I apply to projects that align with my values and interests. I build relationships, I get to know the project inside-out, I listen to the project goals, and I deliver effective, user-centred design. My design career started at international educational publishers Pearson, and I have contracted within the NHS. Not only is it in my nature to design things clearly and with accessibility in mind - it’s in my training and experience. Sustainability is at the heart of every project I take on. Where possible, I won’t work on projects detrimental to the environment, and I will always explore sustainable finishes. I will recommend longer-lasting, quality design, over single-use. I design for the long term, creating design work to last.
