Profile bio

About Kerry Meyer

My extensive software engineering and system architecture experience have provided me with a solid base for developing comprehensive, reliable and maintainable solutions to a varied set of routing, switching and high availability features. I believe strongly in building reliability in from the start. This means considering error and exception conditions and available fail-safes, and handling them starting with the first version of each solution I implement. My experience and familiarity with network architecture, L3/L2 protocols and multi-processor distributed systems has enabled me to develop software that performs well under heavy loads while providing sufficient attention to sequencing requirements to avoid serialization and contention problems in the presence of many concurrently executing operations. I have developed software for all commonly used multicast routing protocols (IGMP, PIM SM, DM, SSM, Bidirectional PIM, and MVPN core signaling in conjunction with BGP) and am familiar with the performance, scale, and complexity tradeoffs for the various multicast deployment options.I enjoy and have been successful in repeatedly eliminating bottlenecks responsible for severe performance degradation by using innovative solutions based on deep analysis of the underlying problems. I write software that generalizes all possible aspects of a solution to minimize redundancy and to promote maximal ability for code re-use. I believe in writing code that is easy to read and understand, and easy to modify and expand without causing breakage.Through multiple projects implementing high availability features, I have succeeded in accomplishing significant reductions in system and link down time. Core Competencies: • Software Engineering• System Architecture• Networking Protocols• Switching and Routing• Unix and Linux• TCP/IP Technical Skills: C, PIM, IGMP, MVPN, MSDP, L2 Snooping, BGP, OSPF, MPLS, Cisco IOS and IOS XR, ACLs, ClearCase, Python

Listed skills include Computer Networking, Multicast, Software Development, Unix, and 9 others.

Network Development Senior Principal Engineer

Current

Round Rock, Texas, Us

Development of network software for enterprise and data center switch products.

Aug 2018 - Present

Technical Leader (Ip Multicast Protocols)

San Jose, Ca, Us

Developed and supported platform independent multicast protocol software for Cisco IOS and IOS-XR operating systems on routers and switches. Responsible for designing, coding, and performing unit and integration verification testing of IP Multicast related features to meet customer requirements and requests. Contributed to maintenance and improvement of the multicast code base by working with field and test engineers to resolve problems found in deployed features. Responsible for mentoring and training of new engineers in the group.• Designed and developed “Stateful Switchover/High Availability/In-Service-update” functionality for IPv4 multicast applications in Cisco IOS to enable continuity of multicast traffic forwarding during a failure of the central route processor.• Designed and developed multicast virtual private network (MVPN) functionality for IPv6 host and multicast addresses in Cisco IOS and expansion of multicast SSO capability to IPv6 applications.• Provided YANG/netconf front end infrastructure for IOS-XR multicast configuration and operational commands, facilitating Software Defined Networking (SDN) use of Cisco’s IP multicast applications.• Implemented IGMP snooping hot standby functionality to enable sub-second link failure recovery using Multichassis Link Aggregation Protocol (mLACP) signalling for an optimized bandwidth multicast “offload” feature used on ASR900 and NCS5500 attached “satellite” switches.

2004 - 2017 ~13 yrs

Software Engineer (Single Router Automatic Protection Switching)

San Jose, Ca, Us

Worked in a team to provide a fault tolerant pseudo wire over MPLS infrastructure for Cisco 12000 series routers to enable data path fault recovery within 50 milliseconds of a data path failure. Responsible for working with developers of the C12000 core infrastructure software components to specify inter-component interfaces to accomplish the required enhancents to the system communication mechanisms. • Designed, coded, and performed unit and integration test verification of a hardware-generic communication infrastructure to migrate configuration and hardware forwarding state from the central control processor to multiple “redundant” line cards of varying types; initially targeted for OC48 ATM line cards.

2002 - 2004 ~2 yrs

Software Engineer (Ip Multicast Drivers)

San Jose, Ca, Us

Designed, implemented, and supported driver software for IP Multicast in new C12000 line cards. Responsible for working with hardware designers to optimize the hardware/software interfaces and performance. Analyzed major performance bottlenecks and developed software solutions making use of available hardware features.• Designed and developed the first hardware based multicast selective packet discard mechanism to be implemented for Cisco 12000 routers, enabling reduction of multicast route convergence times from 60+ seconds to less than one second.• Provided protocol infrastructure enhancements to enable C12000 support of Multicast VPN functionality.• Invented and specified hardware and software modifications to enable a 256X scaling improvement for handling of multicast Bidirectional PIM protocol on OC384 POS line-cards.
