Formal education does not prioritise social & self development to allow young people to build the skills needed to succeed in the 21st century.Young people, especially those from low income backgrounds, feel formal education doesn’t adequately help them develop the holistic skills needed to tackle the big personal and social topics of our time. Over time this leads to a lack of cultural capital and a structural inequality is created.From our work over the last four years… Show more Formal education does not prioritise social & self development to allow young people to build the skills needed to succeed in the 21st century.Young people, especially those from low income backgrounds, feel formal education doesn’t adequately help them develop the holistic skills needed to tackle the big personal and social topics of our time. Over time this leads to a lack of cultural capital and a structural inequality is created.From our work over the last four years, and our research we found that young people of all ages wanted more focus on topics like finance, confidence, politics, productivity, poverty and how they connect. Young people told us that learning about these topics would increase their willingness & motivation to learn and improve not just in the classroom, but beyond it too. They wanted to be able to learn about it from peers both in school and through online video. 68% of them prefer to learn online for example (Beta Generation, Vinspired) So with the help of experts in these different areas, we designed & tested 1 day workshop in schools delivered to entire year groups in Key Stage 3, 4 and 5. We’ve created a menu of workshops that teach young people about the big issues of our time like - race, gender, confidence. Show less
