In this role, I worked with a brilliant team of data scientists, machine learning experts, software developers, agronomic scientists, and geospatial specialists. This group works tirelessly to unlock the secrets of our enormous (and growing) agriculture data stores, to bring the predictability that will ultimately moneyball the industry, where every dollar/hour/resource spent maximizes expected return, measured in grower economics, environmental impact, or overall production.Farmers Edge was an incredible place to work, with brilliant colleagues and cutting-edge tech; I'm grateful to have been a part of it. I stepped down from the role in July of 2020, to take some time off, and spend some much-needed time with my family.

Farmers Edge is a precision agriculture and independent data management solutions company, providing services to producers across Canada, United States, South America, Russia, Eastern Europe and Australia.As CTO, I oversee all aspects of technology development, including IOT, software, data science, and R&D. We are developing state-of-the-art data capture devices, geospatial content management systems, and analytics engines (descriptions below), maintaining terabytes of ag-related data, and supporting operational workflows over millions of acres that span the globe.

As software manager, my role was to build and lead our software team, which included developers, technicians, designers, and managers.

InsertIQ Media is a software start-up in Vancouver that has developed a post-production video compositing system, allowing objects to be placed into digital videos for the purposes of advertising. I joined InsertIQ as a part-time software developer in December of 2013, working remotely from Lethbridge. In addition to being a developer, I helped to build a remote office in Lethbridge, and managed two full-time developers to assist in the production of the system.

GranDuke Geomatics increases client efficiencies by automating workflows. GranDuke leverages the fusion between computer science and geography to provide a diverse range of solutions across many sectors, such as: precision agriculture, oil and gas industrial applications, and environmental monitoring. Services also include the creation of maps and mobile applications to help manage company resources, infrastructure, planning, and the environment.I founded GranDuke with Guy Duke in July of 2012. Our company grew from a small startup working out of Guy's basement, to a business that served clients in oil and gas, environmental agencies, government sectors, and precision agriculture. In January of 2015, GranDuke was acquired by Farmers Edge Inc (see links below, we even received a mention in a techcrunch article).As a founder, my role in GranDuke varied across many activities. My primary duties included:• Software development. I played a development role in all projects at GranDuke.• Recruitment. I was responsible for recruiting all developers at GranDuke, which included advertising, selection, and retention.• Proposal writing. Part of our offering at GranDuke was services, which meant responding to government and private RFPs with contract proposals. Additionally, as a startup, we aggressively pursued funding opportunities, which required developing comprehensive spending projections over 6 month to 2 year periods.• Client relations. Much of my time was spent gathering requirements from existing and prospective clients, demonstrating our products to potential clients, and troubleshooting deployed applications in-person or over the phone.

I took a tenure-track position as an assistant professor in the Math and Computer Science department at the University of Lethbridge in July of 2007. My duties were split between research and teaching. As a researcher, I was the principal investigator on an NSERC Discovery Grant (Topic: Practical Bayesian Network Inference), as well as the recipient of an NSERC University Faculty Award. My research spanned artificial intelligence, machine learning, and human-computer interaction. During my time at the university, I supervised 3 graduate students, 1 graduate research assistant, 1 internship student, and 14 undergraduate research assistants. I presented my research at several conferences, including ECAI, FLAIRS, and Canadian AI.As a lecturer, courses taught included:• Introduction to Computer Science• Fundamentals of Programming I• Fundamentals of Programming II• Systems Programming• Human-Computer Interaction• Machine Learning• Bio-Inspired Artificial IntelligenceWhile at the university, I was an assistant coach for our programming team, which competed annually in the ACM Programming contest. I left the university in 2014 to pursue my company (GranDuke Geomatics) full-time.
