Research into and the development of techniques and procedures for the inspection of low temperature water and saturated steam pipework systems to identify erosion, pitting and cracking caused by flow accelerated corrosion.

Welding Technician responsible for material replication, weld procedure testing, welder approval, material testing, and metallurgical investigations. Seconded to the Marchwood Engineering Laboratories to support the nuclear power division of the CEGB prior to privatisation of the industry. This secondment was initially for a six-month period but was extended to allow the completion of several projects.Supervision of the welding workshop, including both the building, and setting up of this facility and its day-to-day management.Conducted several material research projects into the manufacture of welds using a Gleeble HAZ 1000 computer-controlled welding simulator and the computer modelling of heat flows and material structures. this work was carried out on both single layer multiple run and multiple run multiple layer welds. The object of this work was to evaluate percentage grain refinements of welds in relation to heat input and traverse speed.

Responsibilities included general NDT inspections and metallurgical investigations into failed components and welds, also welder and procedure approval testing, the design and manufacture of test equipment as well as advising the development team on material selection, relevant treatments and properties. Projects included a full review of the QA system within the Material Testing Laboratory to ensure the laboratory received NAMAS accreditation to UKAS M10 and EN 45001. Sole responsibility for all NDT and material testing, including tensile, impact, and hardness testing, for the whole of the company to both NATO defence and NAMAS standards.
