Regional School District #13, Durham, Ct

In December 2016, I was selected to head up development of a new before and after school program for Regional School District #13 in a full-time capacity.The program was designed for approx. 60 students between the ages of 5 and 11 (Grades K–6) with a staff of 10.Program precepts included:• Formulating and developing the concept to provide safe, productive before and after school care for the district’s students with programming that incorporates enrichment activities as well as academic/structured homework support. My complete presentation before the Board of Education was positively received.• Curriculum components included STEM activities, arts and crafts programs, invited guests/Subject Matter Experts to complement enrichment activities on weekly basis, and specialty programming (ranging from yoga, pottery, and sports “camps” to Oddfellows Playhouse theatre activities).• Staffing model provided one coordinator per school to provide site-based program management at Brewster School (Durham) and Lyman School (Middlefield); assistants/paraprofessionals and high school interns.• The program design featured a self-sufficient, self-supporting financial model with parents absorbing tuition.• Conducted comprehensive research, survey of all district parents with children in Grades K–6, and deep-dive investigations of several similar programs throughout the state to identify best practices.

As Memorial Middle School's longest-serving principal, I provided leadership and direction for Grades 5–6 middle school of approx. 250 students. Under my direction, we enacted programs that supported academic goals, student learning, and staff development while earning an outstanding reputation for creating a safe, positive learning culture; supporting teachers/staff; and promoting the excitement of learning, life skills, and confidence.Select highlights include:• Recruited/hired high-performing staff of 35+; during 17-year tenure, hired more than 60 professionals.• President, Region 13 Administrators’ Association (2004–2016) — Appointed by fellow administrators to head up bargaining unit; represented interests in contract negotiations, personnel issues, and additional matters related to union leadership. Successfully negotiated 3-year contracts multiple times.• Member, Next Generation Science Curriculum Development Committee (2016) — Integral player focusing on science portion of common core standards revision, targeting implementation of new standards/curriculum for Grades K–12 in 2017–2018 school year.• Member, Regional School District 13 Professional Development Committee (2010–2016) — Provided representation and leadership with respect to planning and implementing teacher/staff development.• A variety of other leadership/membership roles with various committees — in addition to serving as CT TEAM/BEST Assessor/Mentor. • Recipient, numerous awards, including this select listing:- Certificate of Recognition from Lieutenant Governor Nancy Wyman (2016).- Official Citation from Connecticut General Assembly (2015).- Public Service Award from Connecticut Office of the Secretary of State (2005).

I was promoted to the role of Associate Principal—and during my tenure, the middle school earned the U.S. Department of Education’s Blue Ribbon School of Excellence award (1997–1998). We also were named Connecticut Association of Schools Middle Level School of the Year (1996–1997) and were recognized for Performance Improvement Institute/District Science Curriculum (1994).Some of my contributions included:• Launching/contributing to numerous initiatives—from Parent Substance Abuse Program (COA) and new teacher orientation program to workshop on school’s Cooperative Discipline Program and revision of student handbook.• Planning, developing, and implementing the District Summer School Program, overseeing coordination of summer writing curriculum and allocation of funding.• Serving as an active member of multiple committees (including curriculum development and student assistance team); serving as BEST District Facilitator and Assessor as well as Coordinator, Eisenhower Grant (Title II funds).

During this timeframe, in addition to my role as a Biology and Earth Science Teacher, I also coached Varsity Baseball (5 years), Junior Varsity (JV) Baseball (1 year), and JV Basketball (2 years). Prior to relocating to Connecticut I taught science for 5 years at the high school level in Poultney and Chester, Vermont, where I also coached basketball and baseball.
