I have a professional background that spans many areas of physics, chemistry, materials science and engineering. As a research fellow, I was involved in a wide variety of research and development projects in the fields of lasers, fibre optics, photonics/nanophotonics, optical sensors and 3D printing. I have been responsible for the management of key laboratory equipment and facilities, including the maintenance and operation of complex equipment such as lasers, microscopes, interferometers, spectrophotometers, 3D printers and much more. I have provided high-level training and technical support to staff and students on the use of laboratory equipment, as well as performing many other duties such as the creation of online inductions, purchasing and safety inspections. I have vast experience in the creation and enforcement of strict health and safety policies. I have extensive experience with laser safety in particular, having worked with lasers of all classes, powers and wavelengths over the years. In my current position, I lead a team of technical staff to manage the delivery of teaching in Physics Labs at The University of Sydney. Specialties: Optical fibres, lasers and sensors, microstructured fibres, ultrafast lasers, Bragg gratings, planar waveguides, photonic devices.Software: MATLAB, Labview, Optiwave, Origin

Senior Technical OfficerUniversity Of Sydney May 2023 - PresentSydney, New South Wales, AustraliaIn my current role, I lead a team of technical staff to deliver laboratory teaching in the School of Physics. -
Senior Technical Support OfficerUniversity Of Technology Sydney Apr 2019 - May 2023Sydney, New South Wales, AustraliaIn this role I managed the Photonics Laboratories at UTS Tech Lab. I was responsible for managing complex facility equipment, providing technical support, inducting/training staff students and enforcing strict health and safety policies. -
Research FellowUniversity Of Technology Sydney Jan 2017 - Apr 2019SydneyIn this role, my research focused on the development of optical fibre sensing networks for the monitoring of railways, bridges, roads, buildings and other civil infrastructures. Such technology can offer excellent performance for distributed strain, temperature and pressures sensing. I also worked on 3D-printed photonic components and I was part of the team that fabricated the world's first air-structured, and step index, optical fibre from a 3D-printed preform. Other research interests included surface plasmon resonance sensors and also novel photonic devices made from nanoparticle self assembly. -
Postdoctoral Research FellowUniversity Of Sydney Oct 2007 - Jan 2017Sydney, New South Wales, AustraliaMy worked focused on the inscription of optical fibre Bragg gratings in standard and specialty optical fibres for telecoms, sensing and fibre laser applications. This work utilities both gas and solid-state ultraviolet lasers to inscribe these gratings. This work involves a high level of precision optical alignment of lasers and also beam interferometers to successfully inscribe these gratings. In terms of applications, our group were the first to develop ultra-high temperature fibre Bragg gratings that can withstand temperatures of up to 1300degC - these gratings are receiving particular attention from the oil and gas industries. Other work investigates the fabrication of distributed feedback lasers for ultrahigh resolution spectroscopy and hydrophone applications. -
Research OfficerThe University Of Bath Jan 2006 - Sep 2007At the University of Bath I worked in the Centre for Photonics and Photonic Materials. I worked on the development of specialty optical fibres such as photonic crystal fibres and hollow-core photonic bandgap fibres. My research focussed on the study of various nonlinear optical effects such as four-wave mixing, parametric oscillation and soliton pulse compression in these fibre types. This work was driven by the potential of such fibres for ultra-short pulse delivery, dispersion compensation and also for use as light sources for medical and sensing applications. I worked extensively with a Ti:Sapphire oscillator and amplifier laser as well as Ti:Sapphire-pumped infrared and visible optical parametric amplifiers. I was responsible for the daily running of such a laser facility, involving regular complex optical alignment of the lasers and also the assembly and alignment of ultra-short pulse autocorrelators.
