As a writer and speaker on architecture and design, I’m always keen to find opportunities to demystify architecture and planning.I believe it is possible to talk to people about these subjects they encounter every day of their lives without resorting to jargon and putting the supposedly arcane into the context of daily life.It is my view that many of the problems we face as a society when it comes to present-day buildings, towns and development is because these are not subjects of everyday discussion. As a Partner in the practice it brought me into contact with all the activities on which I now concentrate as well as the typical role of the architect designing and constructing buildings. These ranged from hotels, warehouses and factories to social housing, special needs work and individual domestic projects. I spent many years involved with sports buildings and I was an advisor to the Lottery Sports Fund when it was first established.My partners allowed me to engage with architectural ‘politics’ which culminated in two terms as a nationally elected member on the Council of the Royal Institute of British Architects amongst other roles.During my years with the office I was also a part-time lecturer at Sheffield and Huddersfield Schools of Architecture. I highly recommend combining teaching with practice to any architect if one is able.
