Geophysics was my primary department and required a diverse skillset given the field and office component. I have worked on a variety of projects involving seismic surveys, electrical resistivity surveys, and GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) surveys. I have conducted these investigations on concrete slabs in a lab setting in order to come up with a reliable way to test the structural integrity of nuclear power plants before re-licensing. I have also applied these tests in a field setting, for the purpose of monitoring potential bluff recession on Lake Michigan. I also managed the University's shake table, which is a mechanical device that simluates earthquakes on a lab scale. With Matlab programming, it was possible to import real-world earthquake data, scale down the frequency and wavelength proportionately to executable levels and test a variety of structures. It allowed for the evaluation of certain mitigation mechanisms such as base isolation systems.

It was a tremendous experience overall that taught me how to level with different personalities, create a positive environment for players, how to effectively communicate/listen to strategies and game-plans with other members of the coaching staff, and how to expand a brand. At Wasatch-Uinta field camp we created several geologic maps of various sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic units throughout Utah, Nevada, and Wyoming. We had the opportunity to work directly with Newmont Mining Corporation and conducted field assignments, such as mapping the walls of their open pit mines, which gave great insight into industry practices, quality control measures, and the challenges therein. We also did mapping exercises with a member of Exxon Mobil’s Upstream Research Company in the San Rafael Swell area. The goal there was to be able to identify potential hydrocarbon reservoirs and traps. Overall, field camp honed my skills with respect to the classification of all rock types, float, structural features, and the interpretation of the geologic history of an area based on the features observed. My skills with a Brunton Compass were also sharpened because we routinely had to measure strike/dip to explain regional trends and shoot azimuths, as well as bearings, to decipher our exact location on a map. In addition, I learned the importance of highly detailed field notes and gathering representative field samples.
