A rigorous and rewarding internship at the Center for Civilians in Conflict requiring strong research skills, a working knowledge of international humanitarian law and practice, and an exceptional level of maturity and focus. Involving participation in high-level Washington DC meetings with elected and military officials, travel to military bases to receive training in protecting civilians, and the opportunity to design and advocate for their individual projects within the Center’s scope of work. Interns have gone on to full-time employment in organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, Department of Defense, Department of State, Open Society Institute, and the World Bank as I hope to do.Internship duties include, but are not limited to:- Researching the many issues around civilians in conflict and drafting relevant pieces including op-eds, blogs, grant reports, and policy briefs;- Drafting organizational, policy advocacy, and supporter correspondence;- Creating briefing books for meetings and missions;- Monitoring conflicts and countries of interest;- Maintaining databases tracking compensation, civilian casualties and displacement statistics, quotes and grants;- Copy-editing organizational documents including supporter communications, press releases, blogs, letters of inquiry, and grant applications;- Conducting in-depth research for the purpose of drafting speeches and other prepared remarks;- Functioning as a self-sustaining member of the team.
