Because if you are making mistakes...you're Doing Something.” ― Neil Gaiman This quote by one of my favorite authors really says it all about my programming philosophy. And if you’re thinking, “Wow, I can’t believe this guy is admitting to making mistakes in his LinkedIn profile” then I hope you will save your judgement until the end of this short summary—until I’ve had the chance to prove why mistakes are crucial, especially to my own personal and professional growth in this industry. At one point in my journey, I realized that making mistakes was vital to my mission of learning not only how to code, but how to excel at it. Concepts like source control, proper architecture, code smells, and utilizing customer feedback have become just as important as writing scripts. I learned this by opening myself up to feedback and critiques from my peers, showing them my work and learning from any mistakes I’d unknowingly committed. It is my belief that while immediate results can be had with a cobbled-together program, only great results are delivered through programs created by planning, design, execution, and refinement—featuring open and productive communication throughout all of these phases.I’ve discovered that taking the easy path and avoiding constructive criticism will produce a programmer who is average at best instead of one who is a valued pillar of a company. Closing yourself off to important feedback will rob you of important learning experiences that define what it means to be a good developer.We all stand on the shoulders of giants in software production nowadays. I doubt they got there without making mistakes of their own. It is my goal to one day be among them and engineer the next great system. Neil Gaiman said it best, I want to Do Something.
