Kevin LaPorte’s law practice focuses on representation of clients in the Social Security Disability claims and appeals process. Mr. LaPorte received his JD from the University of San Francisco Law School where he was also awarded an International and Comparative Law Certificate with Honors. He is admitted to practice law in California. Mr. LaPorte is a member of the National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives (NOSSCR), and has received specialized training in Social Security disability law at national NOSSCR conferences. He is currently representing clients at their disability hearings before administrative law judges in San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose. He has represented hundreds of disability claimants before administrative law judges, leading to retroactive fee awards totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars. Before joining the LaPorte Law Firm, Mr. LaPorte’s practice focused on international criminal law and human rights. He served as Assistant Attorney to the International Civil Parties in the trial of former Khmer Rouge leaders in Cambodia. This trial was conducted as a joint enterprise between the United Nations and the Cambodian government, and involved the drafting of closing statements in the historical trial of former Khmer Rouge leaders, along with conducting fact gathering missions for the crime of genocide. He also worked for the United Nations in The Hague, Netherlands at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), which involved the criminal trial of a former General accused of genocide and war crimes. Mr. LaPorte’s experience helping victims of human rights abuses inspired him to help individuals closer to home who are suffering from disabling illnesses and injuries. His background in human rights laws gives him a unique perspective in representing clients whose disabling conditions prevent them from being able to work.

Working in Phnom Penh, initially as Legal Associate, and subsequently as the in-country Assistant Attorney to Lyma Nguyen, a prosecutor based in Australia. Drafting of the Civil Parties’ Closing Brief section related to the Khmer Rouge Senior Leaders’ Joint Criminal Enterprise policies of targeting of ethnic Vietnamese victims during the regime period. Working closely with Lyma during preparations for the Civil Parties’ rebuttal during the Closing Statements in Case 002/01, which Lyma delivered before the ECCC on 30 November 2013.Assisting with preparations for the genocide trial in Case 002/02, involving ethnic Vietnamese clients. This includes analysis of Civil Party statements in anticipation of various trial management issues, assisting with preparations for witness lists and visiting clients in rural areas of Cambodia.Assisted in the general maintenance of the law practice at Legal Aid of Cambodia, including updating the civilparties.org website, drafting memoranda and providing briefings on legal and procedural issues arising during Cases 002, Case 003, and Case 004, and liaising with stakeholders.

• Drafted legal memoranda for the defense of accused former Khmer Rouge leaders.• Researched international criminal law in the areas of crimes against humanity, genocide, war crimes, and mitigating and exculpatory defenses to these crimes. • Attended preliminary hearings, defense team meetings, and strategy sessions. • Partnered on founding and lecturing at the Fair Trial Rights Club, a series of classes for Cambodian law students on fair trial rights and lessons learned from the Tribunal.
