I have taken on the role of running a new office in Central London. This has included being heavily involved in the formation of the office, from the recruitment of staff, through to the marketing of the opening and the development of both new clients and existing client relationships. As well as this I have continued to assume my core structural and civil engineering role ensuring the technical aspects of projects are ran on time, budget, and to a high quality. I have taken an active role in mentoring junior members of staff and performing the role a Delegated Engineer on our ICE approved training scheme.

Aberdeen

My role was to execute structural discipline engineering activities within budget and schedule, while maintaining technical integrity.I lead numerous structural scopes, including the design of a bridge landing structure to support the link bridge between the existing Montrose platform and the new bridge linked platform. I delivered complex structural analysis to evaluate the structure under fatigue, blast and environmental loading conditions as well as to develop the bridge installation procedure.I played a key role in integrating the engineering team in Chennai, India into the wider project team. I visited the office for 4 weeks to engage and share knowledge with the team. I was influential in ensuring that the work being produced was in line with the core project team, in terms of standardisation, quality, schedule and safety. Upon returning, I acted as the focal point between the two teams to ensure the relationship remained successful. This integration brought significant commercial savings to the project. I also lead the structural scope for changing out the platform cooling water system. I managed approximately 10,000+ man hours and 300+ deliverables over a 5 month period. I was responsible for the allocation of work between the team in Aberdeen and Chennai based on availability and competency.

Montrose Alpha Platform

I undertook a 5 month secondment as a field (site) engineer during an intensive construction campaign on the Montrose Platform. I operated as the main point of contact between the construction team and the onshore engineering support team for all structural and piping issues. A key part of this role was problem solving. My objective was to use my structural expertise to create a solution at the work site that would ensure that any downtime or loss to the construction schedule was minimised as much as possible.Quality control was another important objective. I conducted regular visits to the various worksites to engage with the workforce and to ensure that the engineering requirements were being met.

During this time I primarily worked on the Brownfield aspect of Talisman-Sinopec's Montrose Area Redevelopment (MAR) project within the structural engineering team. I was responsible for the structural design of numerous structures including stair towers, a walkway landing grillage and numerous pipe supports. I utilised STAAD.pro software for the analysis and MathCAD for the calculation and report production. In accordance with industry standards I applied allowable stress design based on the guidance provided in AISC 9th Edition.

As a structural engineer within a civil/structural engineering consultancy company I lead the structural design of numerous schemes ranging from timber frame houses and multi-story residential buildings to industrial portal frame warehouses and commercial offices. Through the variety of schemes I was able to demonstrate my ability to design using a number of structural materials, including reinforced concrete, masonry, timber and steel using various design codes including British Standards and Eurocodes. I was involved in project schemes from concept development through to completion and really enjoyed the collaboration within the various design teams to develop innovative yet practical solutions. During larger projects I attended design team meetings to liaise with architects, engineers, local authorities, contractors and clients to discuss technical issues as well as ensuring site safety through the execution of CDM Regulations. Many of the relationships I built during these projects resulted in repeat business for the company. As well as new schemes, I regularly undertook site survey and inspections. Many of these lead to repair schemes or modifications and extensions which I took ownership of. In the office I worked alongside SER certified engineers to take schemes through planning and building warrant requirements. I had a number of draughtsmen for whom I was responsible for and one of main roles was to ensure that the drawing quality was kept at a high level by providing checking and feedback. I took a lot of gratification from developing the younger staff’s understanding and appreciation of my decision making. An important part of the role was to ensure sustainability through continuous improvement of working practices and systems. I developed several standard calculations based on code requirements to streamline future designs and ensure consistent high quality.

During this time I worked within the insurance team of a building contractor. I carried out surveys on damaged properties, produced insurance reports and subsequently prepared estimates for the repairs. Once the quotes where approved by the insurer I wrote risk assessments and method statements for the works, managed teams of tradesmen and sub-contractors, and organised the purchase and delivery to site of materials and plant.In addition, I prepared company applications for new insurance contracts including substantial information on health and safety policies, and I developed Excel pricing spreadsheets and a structured process of recording job information improving the effectiveness of the working practices.
