During my time at SCANA I worked within a team responsible for maintaining the midlands region of SCANA’s fiber optic network. I was a part of two major projects; replacing defective firewalls and replacing old digital-to-analog convertors with small form-factor pluggable transceivers. When working on the replacement of the defective firewalls I had to go out to each substation and complete an upgrade process. To begin this process, I had to call into transmission and distribution departments to inform them they would be unable to access the substation during the upgrade process. Once the new firewall was plugged in, a remote team member would ftp into the firewall and setup the required tunnels. After the tunnels were setup I had was responsible for calling the transmission and distribution departments to ensure they were able to access the substation again. When working on replacing the digital-to-analog converters, or DACs, I used PuTTY to login to the DACs using a Telnet connection. Once connected to the DAC I had to record what device was connected to each port of the DAC. With this information my supervisor would be able to contact each department that had hardware connected to the DAC to let them know it would be inactive during the upgrade process.
