About Kevin Bathman

Artists are increasingly playing a more deliberate role in furthering social change by helping us to explore shared values and to spark imagination, innovation and social advancement of communities. To put it more simply, the arts reflect and influence society, playing a major role in changing the way we communicate, absorb information and take action. With over 15 years in advertising and graphic design, and over a decade of experience in arts engagement, activation and communication strategies in the arts, community and not-for-profit sector, I am interested in conceptualising creative arts projects as a catalyst for change. My creative and academic areas of interest encompass the social, political and cultural landscape of Malaysia and Southeast Asia, addressing how the art and culture industries, politics, globalisation and media in the information age have influenced the evolution of culture. A Chevening scholar with an MA in Cultural Studies from Goldsmiths, I have a keen interest in the explorative study of diaspora and social movements, postcoloniality and political art. In 2013, I co-founded Carnival of the Bold, an arts for social change project-led initiative to create deeper engagement around social causes. Currently, I have been pursuing ethnography research on the connection between the Chinese and Indian community in Malaysia and Singapore for my project, The Chindian Diaries with the aim of producing a social impact documentary.

Listed skills include Creative Strategy, Creative Direction, Social Media, Art, and 46 others.

Co Founder/Curator/Producer

Carnival Of The Bold

Sydney, Australia

Carnival of the Bold is a festival of social change through the arts. It is a coming together of artists and other leaders who drive important issues of our time - to create deeper engagement around social causes. It is first and foremost a spirit or philosophy that the arts can be a powerful enabling force for social change. It calls on artists to take leadership. And it calls on the world to participate. We aspire to bring social issues into the mainstream agenda, raise public consciousness and shine new light on what it means to live with greater humanity. From sustainability, poverty, justice and peace to human rights, animal rights, equality, education and well-being, Carnival of the Bold aims to inspire and awaken greater public consciousness. It is interdisciplinary and inclusive of all artists - theatre, music, film, street performance, visual arts, you name it.Artists bring interesting and unique perspectives to the mix, and engage audiences in new and different ways. They can strongly influence the way the world frames or feels about the salient issues; a power not fully harnessed. Its inaugural event was held in Novmber 2013, as part of the Changemakers Festival.Through Carnival of the Bold - whether an individual, not-for-profit, government or conscious business - we aspire to find new ways, new ideas and new narratives that will shape our world and future.

In Her Own Words: A Celebration Of Humanity & Universal Love

Kuala Lumpur, Federal Territory Of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

One year on, visual artist Kevin Bathman remembers the life and legacy of Malaysian visionary, Yasmin Ahmad with a new digital art exhibition. Using Yasmin’s own blog as inspiration, Kevin has blended her own words with striking visual images to create an art series as progressive as Yasmin’s own thoughts.Yasmin is best known as the international award-winning Malaysian film director and Executive Creative Director of Leo Burnett Kuala Lumpur. She was responsible for writing and directing Petronas television commercials and films such as Sepet, Mukhsin, Muallaf and Talentime that shattered social boundaries and barriers in Malaysia. In July last year Yasmin suffered a stroke: the subsequent neurosurgery failed to save her.Kevin Bathman, a Malaysian who resides in Sydney, currently works as an Art Director. He was so inspired with Yasmin’s outlook on life and her inspirational body of work, that Kevin devoted his expertise to paying tribute to one of Malaysia’s seminal figures.www.facebook.com/inherownwords
