My investment philosophy is a simple one, but one that is too often complicated.Concentrate on what you know:Investors should never be too proud to admit they don’t know, or that a business is too hard to understand. Investment mistakes are too often made when investors convince themselves they have an answer for every problem. The simpler the business the better. I’m focused on a company’s ability to generate free cash flow over the long term. I aim to understand a company’s business model as well as how management plans to deploy cash flow overtime.Concentrated approach:It is important that the best ideas are allocated the most capital. The key to achieving real diversification is understanding the underlying cash flows of a business, this can only be done by undertaking in-depth targeted research.Focus on absolute returns:Capital preservation is the key to investing over the long term so cash is always my starting point. I am not afraid to be invested in cash if opportunities don’t present themselves.I am looking to take advantage of those rare opportunities where the value of a particular business displays a meaningful dislocation from its share price. These opportunities are hard to come across that’s why I believe that a focused approach that concentrates on a few select ideas is the best way to make money. Identify the key issues and avoid the noise:The best results are achieved through extensive bottom-up research. The key is to identify the core issues that will impact a businesses fundamentals over the long term while steering clear of market noise.Use human behavior to your advantage:It is important to remember the stock market is far more volatile than the underlying businesses it represents. Investors shouldn't be afraid to go against the crowd, I believe it is the irrational behavior of crowds and consensus thinking that provides the greatest opportunities to make money.
