This role involved performing laser interfaced mass spectrometry (LIMS) using a customised device comprising an ion trap mass spectrometer (Bruker Esquire) with a bench-top laser to invoke collision-induced dissociation (CID) of sugar molecules of interest. The work also involved the quantum chemical computational modelling of molecules using Spartan, and a focus on the Hartree-Fock Ap­prox­i­ma­tion of the Schrödinger Equation in quantum mechanics.

This role was funded by a bursary that I won competitively. My tasks involved general laboratory duties and surgically preparing different types of shellfish for viral and bacterial load examination for research and government regulatory purposes.

Testing water samples from waterways across County Dublin as part of government regulatory monitoring. This involved processing samples in LIMS, preparing media for laboratory work, cleaning the labs to a high standard, and tabulating level of contamination in samples (coliforms, etc). Samples derived from rivers and streams, and also Dublin Bay / Ringsend.
