Senior Director Of Engineering, Content PlatformBox Oct 2022 - PresentRedwood City, Ca, UsThe Box Content Platform domain includes the core Box filesystem, the Box metadata services, and the Box Shuttle content migration software. -
Sr. Director, Migration EngineeringBox Feb 2021 - Oct 2022Redwood City, Ca, UsMy Cloud FastPath teammates and I have joined Box, where we will continue to support and evolve the Cloud FastPath product in ways that accelerate moving everyone's most valuable content into the cloud, where it belongs. -
Chief Technology OfficerCloud Fastpath May 2013 - Feb 2021Boston, Massachusetts, UsI lead the highly effective and agile Engineering team at Tervela which builds the innovative Cloud FastPath data movement service, and continues to support our high performance messaging fabric. With Cloud FastPath we have built a compelling product that brings unparalleled simplicity and power to the often messy business of content migration from legacy platforms like on-premises file servers to richer and more modern cloud-based file sharing systems. We know all about REST APIs, rate limiters, TCP windows, NTFS ACLs, and the rest of the surprisingly complex technology environment underpinning your users’ network shares and cloud file infrastructure. I am fortunate to lead such a talented team, as it lets me get away with doing a lot more coding and architecture work than your average VPE. I also often wear a product management hat.Key areas of responsibility for me and my team:- Product roadmap- System architecture- Software development- Continuous integration, release & source code management- Quality assurance- Customer experience & support- Customer usage tracking, invoicing, and paymentsKey technologies:- Linux- Python- Node.js- MongoDB- AWS- Ember- PerforceKey initiatives:- All developers do QA during release cycles. Everyone eats our delicious dog food!- The entire SaaS solution is software defined via CloudFormation and related tooling.- A sophisticated continuous integration system built in-house improves developer productivity. -
Chief Systems ArchitectNovasparks Mar 2013 - May 2013Paris, FrI helped the talented team at NovaSparks with the architecture for their next generation FPGA based feed handler platform. -
Chief ArchitectTervela Feb 2010 - Mar 2013Boston, Massachusetts, UsI led the design and implementation of major portions of Tervela's hardware accelerated Message Oriented Middleware product. I was responsible for both long term technical planning with the executive team and day to day technical leadership with the development team. A key part of my role was requirements gathering and analysis by way of direct engagement with customers and prospects.I ran Proof of Concept trials for demanding capital markets use cases which often required significant product enhancements to be made during the sales cycle. This required working directly with end users and the pre-sales team as well as the development organization.I managed technical communication with key accounts regarding field issues, software and hardware defect resolution, and release planning.I helped coordinate development resources and set priorities.I managed branching & merging for major releases, patches, and prototypes.I proposed and executed major product enhancements including- A scalable N-way active-active clustering architecture enabling essentially unlimited messaging plant capacity (>100 million messages per second) and any degree of redundancy, using a low latency 10 Gigabit Ethernet multicast backbone- Asynchronous store-before-forward equivalent messaging with pipelined & fault tolerant acknowledgements- Virtual appliance integration into Amazon Web Services EC2- A Node.js integration with Tervela's C API- A lightweight message bridge using STOMP and Python- Browser based publish/subscribe middleware using WebSockets / Comet / etc.- Extensible monitoring framework with HTML5 web interface I architected Tervela's next generation hardware message switch with integrated non-volatile flash storage for persistent messaging.I designed & implemented a middleware offload engine for the HP NonStop / Tandem NSK minicomputer for a major stock exchange. -
Principal Software EngineerTervela Oct 2006 - Feb 2010Boston, Massachusetts, UsI was responsible for the design and implementation of the network processor firmwarewhich powers the Tervela message switch. I led the bring-up of a new hardware platform with a new Network Processor, FPGA, 1G and 10G Ethernet MACs and PHYs, etc. This entailed among other things developing Ethernet drivers for Linux & the "bare metal" network processor environment.I invented, simulated (using NS2) and implemented Tervela's reliable UDP protocol.I worked closely with hardware and FPGA teams to bring up and performance tune the network processor and FPGA subsystems.I designed & implemented a custom high performance IP/UDP stack for the Cavium Octeon Network Processor.I implemented the overall software framework for the network processor without an operating system for maximum performance.I built the appliance installer on top of RedHat's Anaconda (Kickstart) for installing the operating system and runtime software on Tervela's custom hardware.I debugged & analyzed vendor supplied software and hardware, including the discovery of ASIC packaging defects masquerading as software problems. -
Senior Software EngineerNms Communications Jul 2000 - Oct 2006Littleton, Ma, Us- Implemented a full IPSEC stack (AH & ESP) for IPv6 on a RTOS without native networking support- Board bring-up & porting of embedded software to new hardware platforms- ARM & PowerPC embedded firmware- PCI device drivers- Performance tuning & debugging of software using logic analyzers & oscilloscopes- Designed & implemented model based TDM switching subsystem for connection oriented multi-stage crossbar topologies- Built an object file linker for TI C54x DSPs
