Battalion ChiefCity Of San José Jan 1986 - Jan 2011San Jose Fire DepartmentFor 15 years I was a Battalion Chief in San Jose, CA, the last 11 years at Battalion 1A. I was responsible for the direct supervision of 12 Fire Captains on nine fire companies in the busy downtown battalion within the 10th largest city in America. I was active with the Office of the Fire Chief as a senior member of the Deployment Committee, charged with the responsibility of Strategic Planning, Standards of Coverage, and Resource Deployment. I also had the privilege of coordinating the Command Van project, in cooperation with the Office of Emergency Services, in securing and executing grant funding to develop, design, build and deploy a Mobile Strategic Command Post and Mobile Emergency Operations Center. As the Fire Response Mapping coordinator (1997-2002,) I directed the creation of the first parcel level fire response map and route of travel maps. From 1998-2000 my Administrative Staff Assignment was the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Chief, providing leadership and management of the largest pre-hospital EMS delivery system in Santa Clara County with a Doctor, Nurse, 125 Paramedics and 580 EMT's. As the EMS Chief, I was also a founding/charter member of the United States Public Heath Service's Bay Area Metropolitan Medical Task Force, introducing many innovative and creative solutions to local government terrorism response planning, training and mitigation in FEMA Region 9, while also actively participating in the FBI's San Francisco Bay Area Terrorism Working Group.
