I am a Partner in EY’s Financial Services Corporate Finance and Turnaround and Restructuring Strategy team with over 30 years experience in corporate finance and restructuring of insurance companies, banks, brokers and IFAs. I lead EY's insurance run-off and restructuring practice advising on run-off strategy, operating model, Part VII Transfers and acquisitions and disposals of legacy business.I am proud to be the current Chairman of the Insurance and Reinsurance Legacy Association (IRLA), the market body for insurance legacy professionals and the recognised voice of the legacy management sector. IRLA activities range from industry consultation with government to promotion of the sector’s skills and expertise. I have been the lead advisor on many transactions involving the disposal or acquisition of legacy insurance business by way of Loss Portfolio Transfer reinsurance/Part VII Transfer or entity transaction, including advising HSBC, InterHannover, Allianz, Unilever and Swiss Re. I have also led many commercial, financial and vendor due diligence projects in the insurance run-off sector. I help my clients create appropriate corporate structures for their business. I have frequently used Part VII Transfers to reshape insurers' and banks' businesses. I have advised on the simplification of European retail, custodian and investment banks, using a variety of restructuring and transfer mechanisms. I led the EY team providing the Skilled Person opinion on HSBC's ring-fence transfer scheme. I have advised many insurers on cross border Part VII Transfers as part of their Brexit preparations as well as for disposing of legacy business. I have a deep expertise and interest in using Schemes of Arrangement, having advised over 40 companies use a scheme to bring finality to their run-off. I have also innovatively used schemes to provide consumer redress. I am a Director and the Chief Risk Officer of Municipal Mutual Insurance, which is subject to Scheme of Arrangement. I have previously managed the run-off of several insurance companies following their insolvency, dealing with all aspects of the run-off including claims, reinsurance, commutations, litigation and operations.I spent 18 months on secondment to a UK regulator of insurance brokers, which involved identifying, investigating and resolving financially troubled brokers. I have also advised several Lloyd’s brokers in successfully exiting their discontinued business.I am a Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Insurance Practitioner.
