Twin Metals Minnesota is an underground copper/nickel mining development company owned by Antofagasta PLC (a Chilean company). The mine project is focused on designing, constructing, and operating a world-class underground copper, nickel, and platinum group metals mine, and is committed to doing so in a sustainable and in an environmentally friendly fashion.As the Vice President of Legal Affairs at Twin Metals Minnesota, I successfully managed the legal and regulatory matters for one of the largest and most controversial underground mining projects in the United States. Because its location is near a sensitive and protected wildness, the matters involved were unique in nature and national in scope. I had the opportunity to work with Congress, the White House, and multiple federal and state agencies at all levels to add value to the company and to set national and state policies that allowed further development and investment in the project. I also successfully defended the project’s legal rights while ensuring the project could be developed in a sustainable manner. Some of my accomplishments at Twin Metals include the overturning of a 240,000 acre mineral withdrawal in the Superior National Forest, the reinstatement and favorable renewal of multi-billion dollar property rights, the reversal of a Department of the Interior M-Opinion, and the successful management of federal litigation relating to these actions. Prior to that, I was the chief counsel for that business group where I managed all the day-to-day legal needs including supervising other attorneys and legal staff, managing budgets, negotiating complicated contracting matters, human resource and union issues, land and water matters, joint venture matters and other key legal aspects for that large and complex business unit. After my time with the energy group, I broadened my experience to include exploration and development activities in both North and South America.
