Leadership is easy, unless you are leading people! With so many different personalities, age ranges, diverse viewpoints, and distractions competing for our attention, leading people is more difficult now than it has ever been. Without the support of fellow leaders, we learn through trial and error which can lead to real damage to not only our organizations, but to the people that are entrusted to our care.We have all witnessed those at the helm of the company act out of their own self-interest. This type of leadership failure damages not only the morale of the organization, but hurts the individual followers. As a leader you are tasked with not only developing the policy, procedures, and culture, but also with demonstrating commitment and adherence to the same.Here is a 10 second, 1 question leadership quiz. What is your style of leadership? Take the next ten seconds and ponder the question… still thinking?Do you have your answer? I would argue that if you have an answer, you might not have passed the quiz. While we all may have our preferred leadership style, it is considerably more important what type of leadership your followers need. We must adapt to what is needed of us, instead of expecting everyone else to adapt to our style because we “made it”. My goal is to share both my experiences and my academic pursuits with fellow leaders to help create a coalition of leaders that support each other and provide a shared resource to work through the struggle that is leadership. As a 17-year c-suite executive, I have experienced the highs and lows of leadership. My academic path shifted after receiving my bachelor’s degree. I shifted away from technical knowledge in banking and finance and toward a deeper study in leadership. I received my master’s degree from Buena Vista University in organizational leadership and I am currently working on a doctorate in education focusing on interdisciplinary leadership at Creighton University.
