Vice President Of Engineering And Cto
As one of three co-founders, starting from an idea, we've grown a successful IoT business helping property owners protect their assets, lower operating costs and increase the sustainability of their properties through a variety of IoT devices that continuously monitor and analyze their environment. We are proud to have researched, designed and manufactured all of our products in our Kitchener facility. As the CTO and VP Engineering, at Alert Labs I am a member of the executive and ultimately responsible for all Engineering activity as well as coordinating with the heads of the other departments. Our product portfolio includes a variety of small cellular devices that monitored water consumption, flooding, power usage and HVAC. My team covers all aspects of product design including mechanical, electrical, firmware, software, UX and data science developers.Key to our success has been designing and building products that are low cost and continuously deliver actionable insights, listening carefully to the voice of the customer and rigorously focusing our engineering efforts on delivering value.
Director Of Application Software Development
As the Director of Application Software at Christie, I have taken the proven design and development practices from my previous business unit and rolled them out to all application software development projects across the organization. My team has led the organization at Christie in the implementation of modern best practices in software development such as continuous integration, comprehensive unit testing and automated system testing. With a strong focus on Agile design methodologies, we have maintained a high degree of satisfaction with both internal and external stakeholders delivered on time with high levels of stability and functionality. In addition to continuing the development of our Smart Install tools (Twist and Autocal) and our video control portfolio (TVC and Jumpstart) my team has taken on responsibility for all virtual touch points for our next generation of projectors including web controls and on screen displays as well as PC and mobile applications. Innovative functionality combined with a strong UX-driven design philosophy have led to the creation of advanced visual products that not only satisfy, but delight the end user.
Sr. Program Manager
As a Program Manager in the Visual Environment group, my projects were geared towards the Visualization and Simulation markets within Christie. My main responsibilities were for Christie's software products within VE but I also participated in the management of some projector projects including the Matrix WU, Mirage WU and StIM projector lines. While in the role, I successfully introduced the first agile software development model at Christie and released multiple products with a Scrum-based process which improved responsiveness to Product Manager requirements while maintaining stable software releases allowing us to respond quickly to field issues. As the software Program Manager, the projects under my department included Christie's Smart Install tools (Twist and Autocal) as well as Christie's TVC video controller and MasterSuite software for management of super-resolution tiled displays (flat panel displays). While in the role of Program Manager, I championed a number of new product developments within the organization including AutoStack and PowerTool. Both of these products originated within Engineering and were prototyped, and internally sold to the organization by the software team before being launched as products. Since release, both of these products have proven to be foundational parts of our solutions portfolio.AutoStack is a product based on our industry leading Autocal product which gives system integrators access to automated alignment for simple blended projector displays without any special skills or training required. PowerTool is a control tool which allows system administrators and display integrators to control a large arrays of Christie projectors to configure, control and maintain them over a distributed network.
Advanced Product Developer/Team Lead
As an advanced product developer and team lead in the Visual Environments group at Christie, I initiated the development of Christie's Smart Install tool set that has been a foundational part of Christie's visualization and simulation business since 2004. In addition to C++ and Java coding, my role included mentoring other members of the team, directing the architecture of the projects and leading the user experience design for the Smart Install tool set. As the team lead, I also managed the project schedules and was the primary interface between the development team and Product Management.During my time as a team lead, our group designed and released multiple versions of our Twist software which is designed to facilitate the creation of seamless multi-projector arrays by providing the user with manual control of image warping and edge-blending within the projector enabling displays of tens of millions of pixels to be displayed as a smooth continuous image on any surface, from flat screens to the sides of buildings. In addition to Twist, my team designed and built from concept to release Autocal - a patented system that uses Christie's Twist technology and machine vision to automatically warp and blend large projectors arrays. This industry leading product not only simplifies the installation of multi-projector systems, but makes possible complex displays that would have been functionally impossible to install without it. http://www.christiedigital.com/en-us/visual-solutions-case-studies/christie-videos/Pages/Christie-AutoCal.aspx
Software Developer - Contract
While working at Ansys as a contract developer (previously AEA Technology and Advanced Scientific Computing), my role was as the senior developer of a tool to allow engineers to characterize industrial boilers by providing the tools necessary to design and visualize systems to be simulated using Ansys' Computational Fluid Dynamics software. The software was written entirely in C++ using Qt for GUI and the Visualization Toolkit for 3D visualization of systems.
Manager Of Technical Solutions
Visual Solutions was a small development company originally started under a NASA sponsored grant to develop innovative new ways of visualizing airflow analysis results for vehicle analysis and design. The design of ParaVista, our flagship product was a novel design to permit engineers to rapidly compare different data sets in a given study without excessive demands being made on the CPU or GPU of the engineer's computer system. The software was written primarily in C++ using the Visualization Toolkit (VTK) with a GUI and a scripting engine designed using Tcl/Tk.As a senior developer on the program, in addition to the development of the GUI and visualization modules, I was the architect of a modular system which allowed for run-time addition of new visualization methods and new data formats as well as allowing users to build or modify visualization algorithms for their applications using a Tcl-based scripting engine integrated into the program.
Software Developer
While at Advanced Scientific Computing (later AEA Technology), I was first a co-op developer working on a small team to build a visualization system for ASC's computational fluid dynamics software TascFlow For CAD. My primary responsibility was the implementation of visualization algorithms such as isosurfaces and cutting planes within the 3D environment. Following the completion of my co-op term, I was asked to stay on as a contract worker for the remainder of the year to continue to work towards the release of the product. Following graduation, I returned to ASC as a software developer on the TubroGrid project, an innovative tool to make the simulation of turbo machinery using CFD more accessible by simplifying the process of creating structured grids defining the machinery. My primary role was the architecture and design of the TurboGrid engine, written in C++ which facilitated the visualization of the turbo machinery as well as the generation of the computational grid.In my later years, in addition to the sustaining development of TurboGrid, i was a part of the Directed Development group, responsible for the development of custom pre- and post-processing tools for customers, working with a variety of tools including C++, Java, and Tcl/Tk both in UNIX and Windows environments.
