When I was a child, Jacques Cousteau taught me all about the depths of the ocean and all its wonderful creatures in his documentaries. It was an early on impact to look at nature in a different more analytical way. When I studied biology, I joined a molecular biology lab early on analyzing the role of transcription factors SRF and MRTF on the formation of actin cytoskeleton in early stages of mouse embryonic development. Along the way, I learned more about Immunology and was intrigued by the many cells, how they synergize and interact. Even more, I was amazed how body cells of all kinds can turn into malignant entities with different characteristics and features, different infiltrating cell profiles and expression factors. During my PhD, I worked on immune checkpoint inhibitory receptors in ovarian cancer patients. Tissues where also analyzed for natural-presented HLA class I and II epitopes and how they can be utilized for peptide-based anti cancer vaccines. In 2017 I joined the Lab of Stephanie Dougan for a postdoc broadening my laboratory techniques for imaging, mouse work and my understanding of the interaction of innate and adaptive immunity. I laid major focus on small molecule inhibitory drugs targeting inhibitors of apoptosis proteins and their effect on immune and tumor cells.
